Moving through the creative waters of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, there is a diamond in the ruff, the most unlikely treasure found in Singer- Songwriter Amanda Gooding. Hailing from the island of Bequia she has been writing songs and poetry for about 11 years since her days in high school and singing occasionally in church. Her voice is brooding, sincere and her performance harkens to the early days of many female America folk rockers. Her timid nature must not confuse but inspire and engage. She sums up her music and her addiction to creation as a compulsion- she has to tell her story and the story of those around her.
Her stories encompass many emotions in life, but mainly it is her compositions about matters of love and the heart that are the most striking and appealing. The pining and longing in her voice is shocking upon first listen, with no formal training in guitar playing or vocals, she is able to craft these magnificent tales into cryptic, beguiling streams of compelling harmony.
Her first public appearance was at a local talent search held in Bequia in October 2006, where she was crowned the winner. With this boost of new confidence she has started to write in a more prolific, heartfelt and passionate manner. She now welcomes time alone, locked away from the world in her room spinning sensitive rhymes and stories. Her heartfelt rendition at the renowned Bequia Music Festival in Jan 2008 is just another round completed on the spiral of many successes to come.
Amanda Gooding’s intimate and sometimes sorrowful outlook on life and humanity will be a poignant and important measure in Caribbean music and art in the future.
