Musical history: Piano
*Been having lessons since I was 9, but started playing by ear long before then. Teachers: Jem Napier, Pearl Bartai, Deirdre Hayward, Nicholas Ashton.
*I passed my ABRSM Performance Diploma exam in July 2008. YAY!
Musical history: Singing
*Sang in all three vocal ranges in Capella, the Sandwick Junior High School girls choir, for 6 years, during which we performed in Norway and Edinburgh, and recorded our CD "Above Us Only Sky".
*Joined Shetland Choral Society for 2005-2006. Was Alto representative on the committee for that time.
*Currently sing 2nd Alto with Napier Uni Chamber Choir.
Musical history - Double Bass
*Started double bass as my second instrument in around 2000, after being inspired by double bassists I saw at the Shetland Folk Festival. Teacher: Ferri Bartai.
*Played with Shetland Youth Jazz from around 2002 to 2006, and still play with them occasionally when I'm home.
*Also played with Fiddle Finale for a wee while.
*Notable moments have been a weekend workshop with Chris Stout, and various workshops with Phil & Tom Bancroft and Kevin McKenzie with SYJ.
*Currently I am not having lessons, but play in the Napier Uni Chamber Orchestra and occasional one-off recordings/performances with other Napier Music Students, including Steven Smith's EP In a Box.
Musical History: Other
*Optional modules I have taken at university have been Keyboard Skills (figured bass, score reading, etc), Keyboard Improvisation, and Techniques of Conducting, Instrumental/Vocal Teaching, and currently Introduction to Music Therapy
*I volunteered as Forth Children's Theatre's Musical Director for the Easter 08 production, Talent.
*I've page-turned for Nicholas Ashton, Peter Hill, James Clapperton and various students in concerts and exams.
*I helped out at the second Sonic Fusion Festival in Edinburgh Sept 08, often do front of house for the Edinburgh Composers' Collective, help out behind the scenes at the Georgian Concert Society's concerts, and am the stage manager for the Edinburgh Napier Lunchtime concert series.
*Saving the best till last, I'm a member of the SoupSpoon Orchestra playing toy accordion and some percussion, and being their Chief Baker - no rehearsal is complete without cake! We went on a Park Crawl in July 08 - check out the photos on the Myspace page!
Future plans include learning the flute so I have an outlet for all the folk music I've gotten into my head over the years - I'm not a great piano vamper, and I don't have my own double bass, so joining in during sessions back home isn't always easy! I'd learn the fiddle, but the strings confuse me as they are tuned differently to the double bass.
