The Southern Pines Animal Shelter is an "open admissions" shelter, meaning that no animal is turned away regardless of health, age or temperament. The shelter works with the cities of Hattiesburg and Petal to house their stray animals, while also accepting unwanted and lost pets from surrounding counties.
In 2008 there were 9,467 lost, abandoned, and unwanted animals brought to the Southern Pines Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, 3 out of 4 animals must be euthanized because of a lack of space, resources, and adoptive homes. You can help by spaying or neutering your pets and adopting your next dog or cat from the Southern Pines Animal Shelter.
The shelter receives some funding from the cities of Hattiesburg and Petal, as well as from Forrest and Lamar counties. Tax-deductible private donations are a major source of funding for the shelter.

Mission
To strengthen the bond between our community and its animals by promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership in a variety of ways, including:
Sheltering lost pets and reuniting them with their owners
Finding homes for unwanted pets
Educating the community about the problems of unwanted, neglected and abused animals
Providing humane care for all animals in our custody
Pet Adoption
The Southern Pines Animal Shelter offers many pets, large and small, to accommodate most any environment. Puppies and kittens are always on hand, but because adult animals are difficult to place, adoption of the “old timers†is encouraged.

The Southern Pines Animal Shelter is a PetSmart adoption partner. Shelter animals may be available at the Hattiesburg PetSmart store.
