About Me

Dancing Cat Records was founded in 1983 by pianist George Winston. His goal was to record both the musicians who have influenced his music and musicians whose music he felt needed to be preserved for future generations.
In 1985 Dancing Cat began releasing solo guitar recordings by Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete, classical guitarist Michael Lorimer, and guitarist George Cromarty, as well as the classic 1974 ROCK 'N' ROLL GUMBO album by the New Orleans R&B pianist rofessor Longhair; and also albums by New Orleans songwriter Shad Weathersby, and singer Sylvia Kohan. Dancing Cat also released the soundtrack to the children's story THE VELVETEEN RABBIT, with narration by Meryl Streep and solo piano accompaniment by George Winston.
Dancing Cat then began focusing on recording the masters of the beautiful fingerstyle solo guitar tradition from the Hawaiian Islands known as ki ho'alu , or Slack Key guitar. This material became Dancing Cat's HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITAR MASTERS SERIES.
As of 2009, Dancing Cat has produced 39 recordings in the ongoing HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITAR MASTERS SERIES, the first of which was released in April of 1994, and more are planned. The guitarists recorded to date include: Keola Beamer, Bob Brozman, the late Sonny Chillingworth, Cindy Combs, the late Barney Isaacs, Ledward Kaapana, George Kahumoku, Moses Kahumoku, Ray Kane, Dennis Kamakahi, Ozzie Kotani, George Kuo, the late Leonard Kwan, James Bla Pahinui, Cyril Pahinui and Martin Pahinui.
Seven recordings have been on Billboard's World Music Chart, with the HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY GUITAR MASTERS INSTRUMENTAL COLLECTION making it to 4. Six recordings have won Hawaii's annual Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Instrumental Album of the Year. The holiday compilation KI HO'ALU CHRISTMAS was awarded best Christmas Album in 1996.

The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) and Na Hoku Hanohano Awards trace their origins to 1978 and KCCN-AM Radio, then the world’s only all-Hawaiian music radio station.

Conceived as a radio station promotion by Krash Kealoha (Victor ‘Opiopio), legendary deejay, program director and driving creative force behind KCCN-AM, in Na Hoku Hanohano (The Stars of Distinction), Kealoha envisioned a formal recognition and celebration of recorded musical excellence in Hawai‘i—so long ignored by mainland awards programs..

Kealoha—with the support of KCCN owner Sydney Grayson and Kealoha’s original deejay team including Kimo Kaho‘ano and Jacqueline “Skylark” Rossetti—launched the first Na Hoku Hanohano Awards presentation in 1978.

As no organized “academy of artists” yet existed among Hawaii ’s musicians—the role HARA would come to play —the earliest awards were determined by public vote.

By 1982, Na Hoku Hanohano Awards evolved into an industry awards ceremony administered by recording professionals. The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts was patterned after the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (also referred to as NARAS or the Recording Academy), which produces the Grammy Awards. Each year the Hawai‘i Academy produces a live television broadcast of the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards honoring the achievements of excellence in the recording arts. It has become the biggest annual entertainment event in Hawai‘i.

Influences: TWO NEW CLASSIC SLACK KEY TITLES

Dancing Cat Records is proud to announce the release of new albums by noted Slack key guitarists Cyril Pahinui and Cindy Combs – two new additions to the label’s acclaimed Slack Key Master series.

Cyril Pahinui grew up in Waimanalo, a small town on the coast on Oahu, where his father, Gabby Pahinui, was one of Hawaii's preeminent and most influential slack key guitarists. Growing up in the Pahinui home, Cyril was nurtured in an environment that provided food, shelter, rehearsal space, concert hall, and playground for many of Hawaii's foremost traditional musicians. The jam sessions there often went on all day – sometimes all week.

He’eia, Cyril’s third solo album for the Dancing Cat label features deep and soulful solo guitar instrumentals, and vocals accompanied by his solo acoustic guitar. Cyril’s outstanding improvisational ability on some of Hawaii’s most beloved songs is showcased on this album.

Cindy Combs unique style is influenced by her early exposure to Hawaiian music and American music, as well as from her lessons with the great Slack Key guitarist Keola Beamer in 1971. Since then, Cindy has shown herself to be a gifted composer and vocal stylist. Sunny Rain displays her ability to seamlessly combine traditional Hawaiian music with occasional jazz stylings, creating a sound all her own.
