Godsmack Biography
Godsmack was formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1995 by frontman Sully Erna when he decided that for once he wanted to start his own band from scratch. The only problem was that he had never fronted a band before, he was always a drummer. He drummed for such bands as: Strip Mind and Meliah Rage. So he made a bold move and decided that he would sing for the band. Next he went on the search for other members. The first person that came to mind was Robbie Merrill. Robbie had been playing the bass guitar in numerous bands around the Boston club scene and Sully thought he would be perfect for the job. With Robbie on board, the search went on for a guitarist and drummer. Robbie had recommended Lee Richards(Dropbox, Another Animal) as the guitar player. Lee, who was playing in a couple of death metal bands at the time, gladly took the job. Soon after, they enlisted former Lillian Axe drummer Tommy Stewart. They called themselves "The Scam", but they later changed the name to Godsmack. Things were going very well for the band until 1996 when Lee Richards decided to leave the band to father his child. Now they were once again without a guitarist. They began checking out local bands to see if anyone filled the spot and then they came across Tony Rombola, as soon as things were looking up for the band, Tommy decided to leave the band and Joe Darco took up the role as the drummer. In 1997 they recorded their first album, All Wound Up for $2,500. All Wound Up was being sold at a local store in Boston called Newbury Comics, thanks to impressive sales, the song "Keep Away" soon made its way to the popular radion station WAAF. In January of 1998 they made the collective decision to let Joe out of the band and then Tommy Stewart was back in. In the summer of 1998 Godsmack signed to Republic/Universal Records and released their first single "Whatever". All Wound Up was re-released as Godsmack's self-titled album on August 25, 1998. It later went on to sale 5 million copies. They toured relentlessly on such notable tours as Woodstock '99 and Ozzfest. They then took a break from the road to start working on their follow-up album. Awake hit stores on October 31, 2000 and produced many chart-topping hits. The instrumental "Vampires" was also nominated for a Grammy in 2001. In 2002, Godsmack contributed to The Scorpion King soundtrack with the Number 1 song "I Stand Alone". I Stand Alone received two Grammy nominations. Before Godsmack began work on their 3rd album, news came out that they had parted ways with drummer Tommy Stewart and that former Wrathchild America/Ugly Kid Joe/Amen drummer, Shannon Larkin had joined the band. Now with a new line-up they located to a studio in Miami to record their next album. Faceless was released on April 8, 2003. It debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard chart and solidified that Godsmack was here to stay. In 2004 they were selected to open for Metallica's Madly in Anger With the World Tour. While on tour with Metallica they released and acoustic EP titled The Other Side which was released on March 16, 2004. After extensive touring, Godsmack took a break to spend time with family. After a much needed break, Godsmack came rocking back in 2006 with their new single Speak, along with the new album IV which was released on April 25, 2006 and debuted at number 1. In 2007, after wrapping up the IV Tour, Godsmack announced that they were going on hiatus for awhile, Robbie, Tony, and Shannon along with former Godsmack member Lee Richards, and Whitfield Crane of Ugly Kid Joe, formed the band Another Animal. Their debut album was released in October 2007. Meanwhile Sully is working on his solo album and will be touring throughout 2008. To celebrate their ten year anniversary Godsmack released the compilation "Good Times, Bad Times...Ten Years of Godsmack" on December 4, 2007, it included all of their biggest hits, along with one new track, the cover of the Led Zeppelin song, "Good Times, Bad Times". It also included a live acoustic DVD that was filmed in Las Vegas in 2004. Godsmack plans to start writing a new album, sometime between 2009 and 2010. Over their 10 year career, Godsmack has gained many loyal and dedicated fans in the millions, with their unique sound that blends Metal, Hard-Rock, Tribal, and blues themes, creating one of the most unique and dynamic sounds that sets them apart from the rest.
