When his grandmother asked six year old Charles, what he wanted to do to earn a living, there was only one possible answer: “I wanna be a singer!â€
Charles Newman was born on Dec 28th, 1979. His interest in music was obvious to everyone, even in his sweetest childhood days. At the age of 6 he was able to sing songs in foreign languages just by ear, without understanding a word.
His parents started to pay for piano-lessons, which Charles exchanged for a guitar at the age of 12. From then on he refused any formal teaching and started to practice all by himself.
He also wrote his first song at the age of 12, which turned out to be a doubtful success. Watching the media coverage of the war in Bosnia, Charles wrote a song about war from a child’s point of view. It was broadcasted by a local TV station some months later.
He then tried to convince his parents to buy him his first electrical guitar, which opened the doors to the school’s band rehearsal room. He joined the band at the age of 13 and started to teach himself how to play bass-guitar and the drums.
At the age of 19 he decided to move to Vienna and he started working as a musician in a recording studio. He also attended the teacher training college in order to get a secure paid job.
After having worked as a songwriter and musician for some other artists he decided to start his own singer/songwriter-project. He built a small recording studio and started writing songs. Those which survived the critique of his co-producer (and brother) found their way to the big recording studio and turned out to be the sensitive and emotional songs we can listen to today.
