Ectoplasm - Vaporous substance, often white in appearance, sometimes forms into faces, limbs, or entire bodies of ghosts.

Orb - Energy anomalies that are recorded on film, digital cameras, infrared monitors, and videotape. They have also been seen using night vision goggles. Orbs provide the best evidence of a haunting.

Digital Camera - A type of camera that uses a disk instead of film. Used because it provides immediate photos on an LCD screen, and because it reduces the need for film and developing, however, digital cameras are not always reliable in producing evidence of hauntings. Because of the lack of film, there are no negatives to compare the photo to. In addition, uncolored pixels can give the appearance of orbs. A 35 mm camera with 400 speed film works just as well and is easy to use. The small cost of developing is well worth it when you see the finished product.

Electronic Voice Phenomenon - (EVP) recording on audiotape, videotape, film, or digital recorder for which there is no physical source. Most often, these voices are difficult to understand. A digital recorder purchased at Radio Shack or some other electronics store will work well.

Thermal Scanner - A hand held device which measures ambient air temperature. Sudden extreme drops in temperature sometimes means the presence of a spirit. Similarly, extreme increase of temperature has been noted before paranormal activity.

EMF Detector - basically, it is an electromagnetic field meter which measures the amount of electricity in an area. The higher the reading, the more likely it is that paranormal activity is taking place. Sometimes called a Gauss meter, the readings can also detect other EM readings from appliances, etc. One needs to be sure they know how to use this piece of equipment before heading out on an investigation.
