About Me

Ralph White web page
Ralph White to join Jandek's backing band for one show July 21 concert at Rose Marine Theatre, Fort Worth TX .
"What longtime Austinite and former Bad Liver Ralph White puts on albums and onstage is so mind-boggling and vast, it forces those of us in the description business down a treacherous path" (Darcie Stevens, Austin Chronicle)One of our foremost instrumentalists and a true hidden American treasure, Ralph White has taken the non-academic route in his inspired pursuit of the ancient roots of music on fiddle, banjo, button accordion and kalimba. The "folk/noise/avant-whatever genius" (Joe Gross, Austin 360) has traveled alone to unfamiliar places, including Namibia, Australia, Mexico and Louisiana, playing on sidewalks for tips and making many sacrifices while developing his intimate, nuanced musical language. With Danny Barnes and Mark Rubin, White spent a good chunk of the 1990's as a core member of country/bluegrass mavericks (and recent Austin Music Hall of Fame inductees) The Bad Livers. He now performs his singular blend of ancient rural folk musics and psychedelia as a soloist. White has released two well-liked albums and his third, "The Atavistic Waltz", is due in late 2008.White has recorded or performed with Jandek, Sun City Girls' Sir Richard Bishop, Michelle Shocked, Michael Hurley, Weird Weeds and the Golden Boys. He plays fiddle in traditional Cajun dance band The Gulf Coast Playboys, and, wIth Amy Annelle, performs in the old folk & country duo Precious Blood.

Sounds Like: ...There's a song about murder. The next one's about death. This one's about conspiracies. There are Syd Barrett covers, "Terrapin" and "Long Gone," taken down from hallucinatory heights on the banjo to be baptized in the Delta. Later, he sings of "sycamore leaves and mustang vine," and it rolls off his tongue so languidly it's almost obscene. This is the fight or flight experience of a performance by Ralph White, a fugitive from old, weird America..." Ralph White in "The Wire UK"

White was a member of well-loved punk bluegrass outfit Bad Livers but his solo work is possessed of a much more lonesome spark, exaggerating the implied drone at the heart of the music of Dock Boggs a...
