To say that I have a unique life would be an understatement as recently I came very close to dying. I had a bizarre strain of pneumonia that turned out to be caused by congestive heart failure (CHF). I spent nearly a month in the hospital fighting for my life. Although the experience was some what spiritual, I have not really been ‘changed’ by it. However, ironically, I work doing heart research! My story has touched the lives of many people and so it will be published. Heart disease is the number 1 killer in women! If sharing my story will save 1 life, then I will do it. I’m a research assistant/animal lab tech at my university biomedical lab. My research includes creating mutant axolotls (a type of salamander) commonly called chimeras, to study early embryonic development in the heart. Our research focus is on heart disease and a cure. My recent publication can be found on sciencedirect.com. I also participate in the annual American Heart Association’s heart walk.In addition, I have an extensive background in sea turtle biology, behavior, rehab, research, etc. Sea turtles are one of my passions! I absolutely love sea turtles. Currently I am a consultant for Broward County/Nova Southeastern University as a sea turtle specialist. I enjoy all marine life, reptiles and amphibians, ocean preservation, conservation, animal rights, and endangered species. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering at a sea turtle hospital and at a local cat/kitten rescue center. Both are non-profit organizations and rely on donations. Always spay or neuter your cats & dogs! I have adopted 3 cats: Caretta, Schizophrenic, & Smudge. I also have 2 red-foot tortoises named Myrtle (the turtle) & Big Red. I also happen to own 3 juvenile axolotls, and finally a puppy that is boxer/retriever named Blondie. The animal kingdom is really coming along at home. I plan to build a terrarium for poison dart frogs too. Finally, I enjoy drinking heavily, worshipping Satan, and driving my friends completely insane! Oh and I try really hard to stop the voices in my head! :)
