Evolving Death Grind

About Me

Erzebet is a San Antonio, Texas based Progressive Death Metal band, started in 2004 by Vernon Friday(Ballgag) and Lyle Cooper with the intention of playing intelligent aggressive music that incorperates fluid grooves, crushing chunk, technical grind, along with a progressive mindset. Vernon's younger brother Marlon Friday, and Pissy(Intestinal Disgorge, Ballgag) soon joined the band.

We have shared the stage with Necrophagist, Arsis, Cattle Decapitation, Alarum, Origin, Malevolent Creation, Animosity, Incantation, Hate Eternal, Krisiun, Disgorge, Vader, Decapitated, Nile, Hypocrisy, Soilent Green, Insidious Decrepancy and many more.

We are currently seeking an open minded bass player.

This is the Poster Child for Brutal Death Metal - 100%
Ok so I checked this album out expecting mediocre, generic brutal death. We've all heard it before - the never-ending blast beats, monotonous vocals, repeated boring riffs, etc. That's what I thought I would be hearing. I'll admit, this WAS in a time when I was still just getting into the heavier and less melodic brands of death metal...so I wasn't impressed initially.
However, this was an album that grew on me. I kept coming back and giving it chances. It seemed like it was saying "Come on, give it a try." Until finally it just smacked me in the face. This is brutal death metal at its finest. This is Erzebet.
It's only five tracks long, but in those five tracks it practically redefines everything you know about brutal death metal. Everything in this band is absolute brutality. They play at grinding speeds, with ferocious drums and riffs pounding underneath barbaric vocals. Nothing stands out in particular...everything is equally intense.
If I had to choose one thing that really blows me away though, it's the drumming. This isn't your standard grind/death blast beat for 2 minutes at 90 mph. He has a very unique style...similar to Flo Mounier. He mixes it up nicely while keeping it heavy as fuck.
The riffs are pretty crushing too. I can't really compare them to much....they're just heavy - really heavy. They keep the guitars pretty ruthless, but no songwriting or technique is lost. These aren't easy riffs to play, nor come up with, at least it doesn't sound that way.
There is one slow track on the album, the last track "On Suffering." It's still really good, but totally different from the other 4. It has a doom metal kind of feel to it, while the rest of the album has a grind/death metal feel to it. It's kind of a vocal driven track, while the others seem to be more driven by the guitar and drums.
Speaking of vocals, these are exceptional. He's not monotonous at all, which is a downfall in a lot of brutal death bands. He has a great range, and he knows how to use it - everything from inhuman pig squeals to high pitched black/doom metal wailing to some seriously sickening lows and mids.
The production is really brash, but very clear. The riffs, vocals, and drums all stand out very well, but it's not overdone to where an ounce of brutality is lost, because trust me...it's not. The bass isn't very present, but it's definitely there provided more bottom end goodness.
Overall, this album is pretty much flawless. The only complaint is that it's only 5 songs. Anyone who considers themselves a fan of the brutal death genre who hasn't heard Erzebet, needs to stop doing what they are doing right now and listen to this album. It WILL leave you on your knees begging for mercy. Guaranteed.
