A friendship between drummer Massimo Aiello and frontman Eddie Ponce sparked the idea for Eddie to join the existing band Memoria. Memoria was a full band with frontman Adriano Aiello. However, it lacked a lead guitarist. Eddie came in to the band with his own songs, and their intention was to mix Adriano and Eddie's songs and styles. It worked for a short period of time, but they soon realized that they were both called to the same position of leading the band. Their first solution was for Eddie to leave Memoria because he was the newest member. But then, the bassist Jacob Valenzuela decided to leave with Eddie due to a new love for Eddie's style of music. Although both Eddie and Adriano's styles are great, they differed like cake and doughnuts. They are both delicious, but they are made totally different. The final outcome was a split between the band. Eddie and Jacob started looking for a drummer and guitarist while Adriano and Massimo started looking for a bassist and lead guitarist. After a couple weeks of failed attempts to form new bands, the four of them decided to be in each others band. However, Adriano and Massimo found a bassist and a backup singer and then formed a band called "The Written." The original four members of Memoria then continued as a band only with Eddie as the frontman. They came back with a new direction and a new name "djema." Hence the name of their upcoming first album "Making New Name." The album reflects the band's quest of Making a New Name for themselves as musicians and as christians. The name djema is an acronym of the first name of each band member. The "d" stands for whatever the fans make it. Some say it stands for "destiny," others say it stands for their own name, given their name starts with a "d", such as Devan, Douglass or even Davis (which it very well could be). Their style is a mix of progressive, indie and alternative rock. Eddie's songs bring an original sound made from a world of delay pedals. His songs encourage much creativity from the other band members. Jacob brings a vibration of extraordinary flow and rhythmic bass that serves as a backbone to djema's array of progressions. Adriano's lead and rhythm guitar input brings tranquillity to the blend of djema's vibrant roar. Massimo's drumming brings ease with his explosive hits and kicks as his creativity holds the band's maniacal sense of musical direction within reasonable bounds. Eddie also runs through the chords, notes and beats with his voice that echos with melodic highs and lows which carries the music's emotion. His lyrics, although striking and concrete, are what make djema's music easy to relate to. All of these unique qualities bind to form the harsh, but comforting sound found in djema's music.
