Left of Memphis features the songs of Leslie Merical (who set aside performing long enough to launch & manage Brett Dennen for the last 4 years) and Marty Van Loan (a Telluride Troubadour finalist.) Joined on most shows by Leslie's husband Jim (affectionately known as “Fluffy LeCoq†in ex-pat jazz circles) on electric and acoustic guitar, they've got 3 CD’s out on indie label Three Angels & A Saint. Known for keeping some exceptional musical company, they've played or recorded with Brett Dennen, Kenny Edwards, Jonathan McEuen, Robben Ford, Taras Prodaniuk, Tony Gilkyson, Alan Thornhill, Don Heffington, Van Dyke Parks, Phil Salazar, Perla Batalla, Suzanne Paris, Jim Christie, Master Jeff Evans, Dave Jackson & Raul Reynoso (a quick list). The musical variety keeps things entertaining and the stylistic influences provide inspiration for new songs.
On & off stage contrasts abound. Leslie's 4'10", overly optimistic & believes anything is possible. Marty's 6'4" with a penchant for trying to keep the audience (and Leslie) tethered to a poetic version of a gritty & sometimes unforgiving reality, with the occasional lightening bolt (and bugs) of hope. The contrast works beautifully. Their shared love of a good song and obvious appreciation for their audiences make people feel good.
