Get Drunk, Smoke Tabs, Do a Gig, Meet a Woman, Fall In Love, Get Dumped, Start Again........Drums for clowns was formed out of the main members of a motley ensemble called RIBBON. That in turn came from the remains of a %100 hardcore outfit called THREE-ON-A-MEATHOOK.
Kit Cooper started the meathooks with his brother Graeme and, then, bassist Tony Walker when he was 15. They played some local shows but, shortly after, Tony left to pursue a more extreme musical scene. Long time best friend Adam Wilson took over bass duties and the band flourished playing alot of Newcastle gigs and also apperaing on Newcastle radio. This was a very creative time for the band and one or two songs DRUMS FOR CLOWNS currently play are found on early Meathhok recordings, albeit in an embryonic form.
After a stint of non-commital, indifference regarding the band following Graeme's departure Kit contacted Adam and suggested they get together. Kit, being a borderline scizophrenic wanted to put some structure to some ideas he'd had as what he was doing solo wasn't fulfilling his mood swings. They met with Adam playing drums and some heartfelt and angry songs came about, which they in turn chose to put on a cd.
During the recording of their demo the pair met sweet-as-a-nut-scouser Nick who instantly took a liking to the band's material and joined up as full-time bass player thereafter. Nick's proffessionalism was a blessing and the band's sound became fuller. A spate of local gigs followed untill personal circumstances forced Nick to retire to his native scouse-land.
Ribbon was, once again, without a bass player. Kit and Adam bumbled along for a while as a two-piece(vaguely reminiscent of a geordie white stripes...except adam's got crap tit's) until an old neighbour of Adam's from home, who Kit had also met at a local, offered to have a jam with the lads. The lad was Tonz Lawson(a.k.a Henrik Laaaason) and Drums for clowns was born. Tonz's ability and keen ear for a good ryhthm section drove the band forward and some immense new tracks were written. The band retained the lion's share of their old material but with Tonz in tow the sound was more frenetic, fuller and just fuckin' better!.
Now they're just giving you all a taste of some of their songs on Myspace. The best ones are all to be seen live so GET YOURSELF ALONG TO SEE THEM COZ THEY'RE A GOOD BUNCH OF LADS AND THEY SING FROM THE HEART.
