Downfall Funeral

About Me

Formed in 1992, in the South Texas border town of Laredo, Downfall Funeral merged the talents of Victor Romero (keys/guitar), Rafael Rodriguez (bass), Christopher Martinez (voice/guitar), and Robert Flores (drums). Although much of the early years were a blur, it was a time of trial and error. Much of the material created, was done so as a learning experience. In 1998, Downfall left Laredo behind to see what the self-proclaimed "Music Capital of the World" (Austin, Tx) might have to offer. Crowded into a small home in San Marcos, Downfall quickly saw fit to complete their first self-titled album. Little did they know that from start to finish, recording would take a grueling 12 months to complete due to unfortunate set backs. The end result, a seventy-two minute, eight track, self-titled album described as a symphonic wall of emotion complemented by indigenous beats of the old world. Successful critical reviews by those such as Lisa Swiss of Industrial Nation Music Magazine, helped the band transcend to a larger audience.Playing live shows became a priority and subsequent grueling tours got them recognition in the local press. Just as the band began gaining momentum, they encountered a change in personnel with the departure of their original drummer. "It was a difficult time for us because we were not just losing a band mate; we were losing a great friend as well." - Chris Martinez.Downfall wasted no time in finding a replacement. Because of the band's cohesiveness, it was important for them to find a suitable and reliable replacement. In a little as one year spent working with Josh, he had already surpassed the bands expectations. They wasted no time in writing and recording their second album. His style completely shattered their old ways of writing and the sessions flowed smoothly and were devoid of artistic differences.Currently DF is celebrating the release of their second album, Red Fluorescent, which was written and produced in less than a year. The album, which contains eight tracks, is heavily influenced by the sounds of the post punk/new wave era of the late 70’s early 80’s. Red Fluorescent reflects a sound that is dual-natured, elusive and complex. ***FOR BOOKING INFO: PLEASE CONTACT VALERIE F. (BLACKSUNSHINE, 3 ON OUR TOP FRIENDS) THANKS SO MUCH!***

Sounds Like: “The only other demo I received in this genre is a very old 0999) self-titled demo from Downfall Funeral. These San Marcos, Texans portray a very dark and (slow!) tribal percussion section that has a very Mideastern feel to it as well as a neo-classical instrumentation. A strong Dead Can Dance influence can be heard here. But what makes Downfall Funeral stand out are the extremely prominent and deep bass lines that glide beautifully with the percussion and other musical elements that are used. I was very impressed with the Robert Smith influence heard within the bassist’s experienced playing.” Industrial Nation Magazine Dark/Wave Goth Demo Review by Lisa Swiss“Okay, it seemed a lot later than it really was by this time, and after a long D.J. set by MadMax of Sin 13, out of the darkness came an angelic soaring male voice gradually transforming to an anguished yell and crashing into a cacophony of tribal drums & bass. This is how Downfall Funeral starts a show. WHOA! Originally from Laredo, the band now calls San Antonio their home. and S.A. has never seen anything like them. Even though they’ve played several shows in Laredo and the River City, this was definitely the biggest yet. It’s hard to describe D.F.F. Some of their songs have almost a rock ballad sort of feel, and others have a definite middle eastern flavor but they all have Christopher Martinez’s awesome vocals, Rafael Rodriguez’s driving bass, and Robert Flores’ unreal drum work who’s kit utilizes percussion instruments from all over the world and rivals Neil Peart’s in size. San Antonio, I think we have a winner! D.F.F., I can honestly say, stole the show.” Firecracker Magazine by P.D’ Zenhed (Midian 2002)
