MY ALBUM "RISE" W/ BAD BRAINS ON SONY/EPIC 1993: Rastafarian hardcore group Bad Brains came to New Zealand recently for their first stop on a world tour. NN caught up with singer Israel Joseph-I before the gig...New York - it's a shitstem fe true, jus' like Peter Tosh say". Israel Joseph looks up, eyes black and shining with light. "New York is the head of the runnings yuh know, it's like Babylon fe real. We just happen to exist in that place, right? So check that man, I tell yuh its jus' some runnings."That Bad Brains grew out of a place like New York is no stranger than the band itself. Playing some of the fastest and heaviest hardcore music around, they've been spreading the positive vibes of JAH Rastafari for the past 17 years. Their albums, and their concerts, alternate headbanging music with deep-roots reggae, a living example of how youth and youth can unite.But their stance is not a religious one. "Rastafari is a way of life. So we all try to live a certain way, you know, and this happens to be what is called Rastafari.In my life I really like to tune in to the righteousness and all of that. Me just living and try to understand what is peaceful amongst people. I think that it is the nature of people to be natural and to be peaceful to one another.Many groups and organisations, even magazines like yuhselves are promoting the consciousness and right truth. That's what we have to jus' keep on doing. Remember that we all affecting the youth. It's the youth coming up to run the arrangement. So we have promote the right runnings.We can't go out there and talk about, you know, like bringing violence down upon people. Positivity is the only way. If everyone else gon' be violent, then so be it and JAH know, there is a judgment for that. I and I always gon' stand our ground for a positive life."Joseph was born in Trinidad, but moved to New York when he was 8, just when Hip Hop was first beginning to come to light. "I started Rapping when I was about a year in New York, about 10 years old in 1981 till I was about 16. But then I heard Roots Rasta Reggae, Bad Brains and I heard Jimi Hendrix, around the age of 17/18, I heard different style a music so I wanna like branch out a little." Even so, Joseph praises Roots Reggae music. "Even the dance hall musicians will tell you that the Roots music is the Irie state of mind. It takes ya places within ya mind state I don't think no other music can take you. Sometimes ya just listen to a certain song, ya know, and ya don' have to be smoking no herb or something, I tell ya. It just takes ya there. It's just like that. It's like the wind, with the birds and the sea coming at ya. Ain't nothing computer about it. It's just vital".It is their speedcore sound as much as the reggae beats that most people go to see the band. Their record company EPIC has just dropped them from the label, reportedly because the band won't fit into easy pigeon holes for promotional purposes.But Joseph doesn't see the two as a contradiction."We look at it this way. When thunder and lightening crack and roll, it crazy right? But it's a creation of God, right?Not everything that sound loud and mad, is loud and mad and above reason, you know what I mean? It's purposed, Yes I. Then the Reggae come in like the rain now. So we try to like reflect nature. Cos we got to be natural."Although this was the first time the band have been to Aotearoa, Joseph admits to having wanted to come for some time."We been looking forward to coming here, cos true some positive vibes coming from these lands. And I tell Ya, no matter what development come up on a land, ya know there is certain land ya can trod on where the earth is resounding with positivity from its inner. Like look at how JAH man a come a stay positive you know. It affect the people in certain ways. Check the vibe.Yuh have different forces across the world, like volcano. I stood at the mouth of a volcano yesterday. Well, I never did that before in my life. The wind was just rushing up man and I just lean out into it iyah and it is held me straight yuh know. I wasn't afraid or nuttin', and it was nice I tell ya."Joseph admitted to having had some "nice herbs" during his stay here, but was unwilling to make comparisons."I think that the crucial thing about herbs is that everywhere yuh go it have different vibes, different feelings yuh get from the hurbs in JAH earth when yuh smoke it and when yuh get higher. So I think that understanding that, it's just a different thing. It's not really like which one is better or not. Giving thanks for it being on earth is more important.Some people like to go Amsterdam and smoke Hydro herb and get really high, but me nah prefer Hydro herb. Me like some Sensi yuh know. Hydro herb is too, too... I mean all respect due cos true' me know the Hydro herbs is nice for some people, and yea, Iman smoke it some times, I just like my Green Sensi herb having a little seed still. So I like my herbs to be, yes I."And does herb encourage positivity?"I definitely agree with that. I would much rather have all of the youth in the world smoking herbs than smoking crack or drinking liquor."In America, like on the west coast, there been a little change in the youth. Them don't drink so much no more, they all puffing blunts. Positive. There's still a lot to deal with, a lot there to break down, but it's a start. Herb is the catalyst.Besides understanding that JaH created and ruleth and guide all things, I think the second most important thing to understand is positivity. The key to understanding and wisdom, the key to longevity on the earth, and peace. Yuh must strive within yuhself. And that will be like a rippling effect. Yuh throw a pebble in the water and soon the ripples will reach all the shores. So I and I are the pebble, yuh know.But positivity doesn't mean turning your back on reality. Rastafari is first in yuhself. Is first in yuh heart. No book or nothing can tell yuh about Rastafari. When yuh look at life, when yuh look at existence, yuh mus go by yuh own experience.Rastafari is in yuh heart, not in the dreadlocks, not in the beard nor the clothes, nothing. Is right in here so that is the first place one must look to find Rastafari.And then there have certain crucial books to read. Start read about His Majesty, His Imperial Majesty, King of Ethiopia, Lion of Judah. Check upon His Majesty and read and understand how His Majesty's philosophies on life perpetuate peace, would have perpetuated peace among men but instead they wage war on him. All this type of things to read , Marcus Garvey, the teachings of these people. Yes I"And diet? "I myself are strictly vegetarian, yes I. Yeah man, definitely, to keep a proper spiritual and mental and physical well being, you really need the ital. Proper diet.These are crucial times. Man is bringing war upon the earth and the earth is falling apart. Man is falling apart now because the earth is cleansing herself. Man is in the way so the earth is going to shake we away like fleas.Man say 'well, we dumping plastic in the earth, gon kill the earth' but the plastic na hurt the earth I tell yuh that. The earth is gonna use the plastic, take it down into the earth and melt it and use it.We are going somewhere - the earth is gonna rain out and flood out and burn out and mud slides and forest fires and jus bum everything out and start again fresh, just like John tell it.Certain runnings will come to pass, but it's a good thing that people are checking in this time for inner spiritual enlightenment, because the spiritual side will exist in that earth man. Haile Selasie I, The Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root (D.N.A.) of David (King), the King of Kings, Lord of lords, 225 Emperor of the 2700 year old Hebrew / Christian Kingdom of Ethiopia, was born Tafari Makonnen in a small hillside village by the name of Ejarsa Goro, not far from the region of Harar outside of what is now present day Addis Ababa Ethiopia. He is the son of many generations of Ethiopians who, in a Kingly line proceeding from the Bloodline of king Solomon and King David of the Bible, kept the Pearl or the D.N.A. of the Hebrew line of Judah pure enough so that The Lion Of Judah, The Lamb in the book of Revelations, The Returned Christ, (Haile Selasie I) HIM self could arrive on earth, through this Family. His mothers name was Wayzaro Yashimabet the lawfully wedded wife to his father His Higness Ras Makonnen. His Birth was a humble but festive occasion. The backdrop of the Ethiopian Royal Family's homeland is dotted with rolling hills, green mountains, rushing rivers, grazing sheep and and sweet grasses. The land is pure and World War One was still an unthinkable fire, it was July 23, 1893. The Battle of Adwa began as invading Italian forces attempted to capture Ethiopia and consequently kill the Royal family and therefore the 3 year old Tafari (Haile Selasie I) on March 1, 1896 (Indeed 113 years ago this very day by my watch). This Battle is one of the greatest military defeats and Triumphs as Italy is utterly defeated by the Ethiopian soldiers under young Tafari's uncle, the Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia. Menelik II the Emperor of Ethiopia, was the son of Tafari's fathers brother, King Hayla Malakot. Menelik II was first the King of Shoa, then the Emperor of Ethiopia. These were the late 1890's, horse back, swards, bows and rifles were still the only method of broad scale fighting. The Italian forces failed in their attempt take Ethiopia, kill Tafari, and retrieve the Ark Of the Covenant that had been brought to Ethiopia by King Solomon's first born son with the Queen of Sheeba: Queen Mekeda, 2700 years before. Their Son was named Menelik I. It was the year 777BC, and while visiting his father King Solomon in Israel HE and a group of 1st born Israelites were instructed by GOD to take the ARK OF THE COVENANT to Ethiopia before the falling of Israel and Judah by the Babylonians. So the Ark, the Blood Line of the house of Israel and the culture of laws called the Mitzva given by Yava to Moses in the desert mountain, with the help of the Angel Gabriel were all taken away into Ethiopia via this movement. The 2700 old Ethiopian Scroll called The "Kebra Nagast" or "Glory of Kings", known to the world since the 2nd World War is an intricate part of the Bible but not included because of prophecies contained in Revelations chapters 5 through 10, exm. 10:1-7 then verses 8-11 of the same chapter. The writings in The kebra Nagast describe the meeting of King Solomon of Israel, and Queen Makeda of Ethiopia, the birth of Menelik I in the Homeland of Ethiopia, Menelik's leaving Ethiopia at age 22 to meet his father Solomon in Israel, of the supernatural activities that occurred during the moving of the Ark of the Covenant to Ethiopia, and of the survival of the Law, the Ark of the Covenant between Jehovah and the Israelite Hebrews, and the Hebrew bloodline of Kings in the Kingdom of Ethiopia. This in effect, stopped the conquering Babylonians in 576 B.C. from capturing what is the very essence if the Hebrews, and of Israel its self: the Judaic Bloodline of kings, The Book of the Law, and the Ark of the Covenant, all of which were safely taken away to the Kingdom of Sheba, Kush, Midian or Ethiopia as we know it. That was 2,700 years ago. Flash forward now 700 years to the time of Christ where Jesus mentions this very situation in Matt. 12:42, and also Luke 11:31. So by failing to capture Ethiopia in the Battle of Adwa and therefore stop the growth of The Returned Christ on earth, under Menelik II, the Italian forces began to see the wonders, horror and redemption of the 20th century to unfold before their eyes. It was the dawn of World War 1. The roman church at that time knew then that their world of Biblical misrepresentation was as a house built on sinking sand, and that it was quickly coming to an abrupt and Supernatural end. By the age of 19 the young Ras (or Prince) Tafari Makonnen had become the Governor / Regent of a Provence called Harrar in Ethiopia. Having studied extensively abroad in Europe and in his Homeland, the young Tafari proved himself to be an exceptional Governor after the likes of his father His Highness Ras Makonnen, the Governor before him. Ras Makonnen Haile Selasie I's father was the son of the Princess Tanagna Warq, the daughter of the great King Sahla Sellasse of Shoa. His father was Dejazmatch Walda Mika'el Walda Malakot of the Doba and Manz nobility. He was born on the 8th of May 1852 at a place called Darafo Maryam in the district of Gola. ( pp. 13 of "My Life and Ethiopias progress). Ras Tafari later became Married to Queen Mennen and became Crown Prince and Regent Plenipotentiary (1911-1916). The Emperor Menelik II became ill and died around this same time, leaving only Ledj Iyasu, Ras Tafari's desirous cousin to reign as Emperor of Ethiopia. Due to the levels of corruption that was prevalent in Ledj's administration, wanting to conspire with the enemies of Ethiopia for the gaining of alms and personal wealth. It was deemed necessary to act in behalf of the Nation and the Sanctity of the Royal family. In 1915 Ledj was asked to step down from his post as Emperor, but he refused. He instead banded himself together with a group of tribal worriers and opposed the royal family. The Young Tafari Makonnen was called by the newly appointed Empress Zauditu, Daughter of the late Emperor Menelik II and his 1st cousin to lead the march against these Ethiopians who had caused the great rift. The initial contact was between two cousins with the passing of many letters, but due to Ledjs constant desire for power, on the morning of August 27th, 1917 a fierce battle on the fields of Ethiopia ensued. Brother against brother for the dignity of the Christian faith and the Hebrew Royal family. The battle raged, but in the end it was the young Tafari Makonnen that was left standing. Fulfilling Prophecy written in EZEKIEL 30: 1-9. Ledj was no more. It was the 27th of September 1916. Tafari (Haile selasie I) was 23 years old. Ras Tafari Makonnen then quickly began to modernize His Homeland of Ethiopia, abolishing slavery throughout the land, and later with the help of the Empress Zauditu, Ethiopia was able to join the Newly formed League of Nations in the year 1923. This was seen as a positive move forward in Ethiopias modernization and also its position of defense in the affairs of nations as it pertained to war. The whole land of Ethiopia was then steeped in celebration. His Majesty Haile Selasie I would later write: "The rejoicing was for no reason other than that We thought that the Covenant of the League would protect us from the sort of attack which Italy has now [1935-1936] launched against us" (p. 77 of My Life and Ethiopia's Progress). In the years to come, Empress Zauditu would herself die and so on November 2nd 1930, Tafari Makonnen ascended the Throne and Bore the Title King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Rood Of Kind David. Fulfilling the prophecy contained in: Daniel 7: 9-10 & 22 and Revelation 5:5. (soon 19:11-21, Chapt. 20, 21, 22.) He revealed to the world his "New Name" HAILE SELASIE I (Power of the Holy Trinity), fulfilling the prophecy in: Isaiah 62: 2 and Revelation 3:12. Shortly after this in 1936, the fascist Axis powers again tried to invade Ethiopia, seeking Haile Selasie I life and also the Ark of the Covenant. The League of Nations refused to aid Ethiopia, and so Selasie I bought the armies of Britain and France with Ethiopian Gold and Treasure then took them into War to defend Ethiopia against the fascist and to rest again on the Royal Throne of King David, Solomon and Israel. The evil fascist Axis powers were defeated again. Nobody can defeat "Mr. Strong" as was his code Name to the Allied Powers. It was the dawn of World War II, the years were 1936 to 1941. In fact, one can argue that this act on the part of the Italian forces was the catalyst by which WWII was begun. By the Leagues refusal to aid Haile Selasie after he had presented his case before them, they in effect gave the Axis fascist the go ahead to invade Ethiopia and Poland. The Book Of Revelations PROPHECY 5:5 "....Weep not, for The Lion of Judah has prevailed to break the 7 seals" had come to pass and in 1941, the world knew it, and knew H.I.M. See Bible book of Numbers chapter 6. Revelation 5: 8-10. In the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, Haile Selasie I did PREVAIL and remained The Light of Truth and Justice in the earth, and as The Returned Christ on earth he taught love to all the nations. As the Field Marshal of the earths armies (funded the allied powers with Ethiopian Gold and Treasure during WWII), he forbade World War ever again. he went to the Caribbean to meet with the Rastafarians in 1966, giving Rastas land in the hills of Ethiopia called Shashamene (Sha Sha Men ne) in order to escape the mark of the beast. He gave us all the great and good people that were born in the 20th century.
