Welcome to BLUCK YOU! This night came to me in a flash of light and a crack of thunder. At least that's what it felt like to me because it seemed so obvious. As a Black kid growing up I was ALWAYS the only Black person at rock shows. Though at one show I was one of 5. Me and 4 burly security guards. Not cool.
Things that are also not cool:
1. Racism
2. Elitism
3. Hipsters
4. Scene Mullets
I would be overwhelmed with a barrage of all of those things everytime I wanted to go out and have fun seeing a band I liked. None of my friends liked the music I did so there was usually no one to go with. And no one to start bands with. I decided that there needed to be a place were Black people who were into more than hip-hop and r&b and didn't have lame issues like "Omg I like Belle & Sebastian ~~**am ai stil blak o noezz~~**!!!11" could go and love music and see themselves onstage as well as in the crowd and dress like they wanted to and talk how they wanted and hang out with who they wanted and just be who they were without having to deal with the "Filthy 4" above.
BLUCK YOU! is that place. Just a night of all Black or Black fronted bands that are outside the more palatable "thug and hoochie" theme of mainstream music these days. If you support our scene, ADD US AND COME TO OUR SHOWS!!! If you want to play a BLUCK YOU! night, well here are the d's:
1.This is a night of bands that are all Black or Black fronted. If your band is Black fronted, they not only have to sing but be either the main songwriter or lyricist.
2. This is purely experimental/electro/indie/punk/singer-songwriter/whatever weirdo shit. So no metal bands, Top 40 pop or r&b. (Unless you are old school and travel with a horn section and can knock a mother's wig back like James Brown or something. If not, sorry.)
3. If you've gotten this far and you still qualify, just send me a myspace message and include your name, role in the band and a contact email. It would also be great if you had a NYC show coming up. If I'd like you to play, I'll def. come and check you out!
4. If you don't have a band but know one who fits the criteria and might like to play, feel free to pass them along a link to this page. I'm sure if they want to be involved, they'll message me.
5. If I like your music, you'll play. There's nothing impartial about it and if you don't get picked it doesn't mean I think you suck. Well it might, but it might not. I just have to assume that if I want to hear you play, a lot of other people will too. Nothing personal. I just choose what I like.
So that's it! This night doesn't exist without the bands, so if you want to be a part, get in touch! Thanks. - Iféoluwa B.
