Born and raised in The Bronx, Melodie was appropriately named by her mother former Broadway performer Jewel Nicholson. She started singing in churches at the tender age of 4; even then her voice was way beyond her years. At 10, Melodie began writing poetry and songs. By that time she had already won numerous talent shows, and performed for many important people such as the mayor, the governor and other government officials.
After being accepted into LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, Melodie started recording her original songs and performing them. She wrote and performed songs for the Gospel Choir, New Music Singers, and Rising Stars. When she graduated in 2001, she was awarded the Whitney Houston Award for Vocal Excellence Scholarship from ASCAP.
Melodie went on to attend Five Towns College, where she was a composition major. It was there that she formed her band SoulGasm. Melodie co-wrote a song with an up and coming rapper DyNasty, which gave them the opportunity to open up for such artists as MOS DEF, Fabolous, Benzino, Craig Mack and Allure. Melodie and SoulGasm recently opened up for Nina-Sky, at the Five Towns College Hurricane Katrina Benefit Concert.
Melodies music is a refreshing mix of, neo-soul, R&B and light humor. Her songs range from...."Around" A song about meeting the man of her dreams, to "1-2-3", her rather unconventional way of taking care of a cheating boyfriend, to "Good Shhh...", her jazzy ode to a smoke filled life.
Her lyrical and compositional style is unlike that of any artist out right now. She pushes the musical boundaries with her depth and lyrical versatility. With influences like Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Kim Burell its no wonder her music reflects various themes and genres.
Melodie always packs the house with her incredible and fine tuned band SoulGasm. Melodie is sure to challenge the industrys label of what music is. She is definitely a musical force to be reckoned with.
