September 15, 1978)The youngest of six siblings, Charles Grigsby was born in Oberlin, Ohio. Although he has no formal singing training, his entire family being musically inclined, helped fuel his passion for song. Like most kids his age, he grew up with M-TV, Nintendo and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but his love for music would help him ultimately find his place.Listening to and mimicking singers every chance he got, Charlie found he had a unique gift for near-perfect pitch at an early age. As a teenager he would use two cassette recorders to lay down multiple tracks of his own voice, harmonizing to the songs he memorized. Learning from masters of harmony such as Boys II Men and Take 6 he matured the velvety smooth tone of his voice. In high school, he joined the school choir to aid in his study of singing mechanics. Never a standout voice in the choir, he prodded along, taking in every instruction; forever a student of the art. After high school, Charlie moved to Detroit, Michigan, and enrolled in school to study computer aided design. Constantly looking to hone his skills, he would find "pick up" jam sessions with anyone willing to play and sing. Ultimately his academics suffered and he dropped out of school. Still bent on following his dreams in the music industry, he moved back to Ohio where he received the support of family and friends.Several years and many failed attempts later, Charlie, under the begging of his friends, found himself back in Detroit standing in line at the auditions of Fox's American Idol. The second season was gearing up as nearly 70,000 contestants auditioned with the hopes of becoming the next great superstar.Initially receiving less than positive comments from Simon Cowell, it was Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul who saw the "diamond in the rough" and sent him to Hollywood. Charlie excelled amidst the contest pressures in Hollywood and stepped up his game, being voted into the 32 Semifinalists. The days leading up to the "do or die" battle for the finalist spots, Charlie suffered from a debilitating stomach virus. Starved of both food and sleep, he took center stage and belted out a flawless rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed." And overjoyed he was, as Simon Cowell recanted his previous remarks and gave Charlie votes of high praise. The performance garnered him the most votes from the viewers, securing him as the first of the twelve finalists. While America truly loved Charlie, his public market share was too little to overcome the early crowd-winning by Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. Charlie was voted off the show, but that was just the beginning.Charlie's back in the spotlight, gearing up for his debut album. The album project, spearheaded by Citiboyz Music, will reunite Charlie to the American public giving them a new sound from an old face. The long days and late nights in the studio will pay off, once again bringing the grocery store clerk from Oberlin back to center stage. ____________________________________________________________ ____CHARLIE'S FAQDo you have any formal singing training? No formal training. Just lots and lots and lots of practice and criticism. When did you first start to sing? For as long as I can remember. Singing is as much a part of me as my name. What is your favorite song to sing? There are so many styles and unique artists and flavors out there, it's too difficult to narrow it down to just one. What is the first concert you went to? The first concert that I can remember going to was Take 6. To this day they are still my favorite group. I just can't get over their incredibly dynamic acapella harmonies. What other talents do you have? I have learned to play the piano by ear. I've even learned to read sheet music. I've picked up the guitar a couple of times and learning that too. I'd love to be able to play every instrument out there! I just love music that much. Harmonizing I think is one of my strongest musical traits. I have a pretty good ear to be able to harmonize with just about anyone. It's like I can almost "see" the harmonies. What are your goals in life? I wanna be happy! Seriously, making it big on the music scene is a huge dream for me, but if I'm not happy with my life and with myself, it won't really mean much. What album would your friends be surprised you own? Carmen (Christian singer) and Acapella, "Set Me Free."What is the first CD you ever bought? Acapella, "Set Me Free."What is your favorite type of music? I love all music genres, but I would have to lean toward R & B/Hip-Hop as my outstanding favorite. What is your favorite song? That's tough to answer, but I think I would have to go with Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon in the Sky." I could listen to it any time of day no matter how I feel. It's a real pick-me-up song for me.Favorite male pop artist? Gotta be Michael Jackson!Favorite female pop artist? Tough, but I'll go with Janet Jackson, you just can't beat talent with a successful track record like hers.Favorite album? Michael Jackson's, "Thriller."Who in the music world do you think your style is most like? The way Musiq's style and personality show through his music most reminds me of the way that I try to come through in my music. Most embarrassing moment? I can remember being very small as a kid. When I was about 6 or 7 years old, our family dog, Bambi, took me for a walk! She dragged all over the front yard, right in front of all my family. Sheesh! If you couldn't sing, which talent would you most like to have? As a hobby I'd love to play a musical instrument. Professionally, I would liked to have become a computer graphic designer. I've always been fascinated in that kind of stuff. What has been your proudest moment in life so far? Each day taking a closer step toward reaching my goals.
