Mikey Assassin

Michael Baker aka Mikey Assassin is no newcomer in this industry. A lot of people associate him with Ras Shiloh and prior to that Demolition Music Sound System. Let’s go further back so you can get a fuller understanding of Mikey’s history. The official start of his musical career is when in high school, he decided to pick up an instrument. He became a drum major when joining his school’s band. While in the band he used disc jockey for his school and private functions. The more he played out, the more he was requested because of his distinct ability to play the music the crowd wanted to hear. After school he did a stint in the military and continued his deejaying expertise behind the turntables. Now while in Turkey in the military, he experienced a diverse crowd so if the crowd wanted R&B he had the music. If they wanted Country music, he made sure that he would get the right selections to please the crowd.After fulfilling his military commitment and a world of experience with different cultures under his belt, he came back to New York. During those times House Music was underground but creeping above ground hitting more mainstream radio. He was one of a group called Total Science that from 1987 – 1991 produced and distributed 11 singles that were popular and loved by “house heads” here and abroad. In fact their production also had a great appeal in Europe where to this day, that music is still being played. The classics never die. Total Science original members consisted of Ian Skeete, Samuel Medina, Rodney Holley and Terrence Williams. Over the years some members left and there were additional members like Dwayne Crooms and William Gaye. Mikey was a part of Total Science existence from beginning to end and worked with artist like Grace Jones, Sybil, Jomanda, Craze, Adeva, Freedom Williams of C&C Music Factory and Barbara Tucker, just to name a few. While producing, arranging and coordinating he met Trackmasters, the popular producer, who back then was known as Tone.While juggling all of these positions, he would still deejay. It was around these times Mikey got his name Assassin. Since he didn’t work for anyone or represent an official sound, he was a “for hire” type of guy, “assassin for hire”. People will hire him, he came in, set the people right, got paid and left. It wasn’t too long after that, Mikey Assassin decided to create an official sound system for himself. In 1991, born was Demolition Sound System. Representing the sound, was Tony Hawk, Beenie Hawk, Phillip, Science, Germs, Bandit, Gadgets, Kayan, Cinco, Jahson, Amazing (who now plays for Nexxt Level), and Big Belly Youth aka Ras Shiloh. Demolition a Brooklyn based sound system has played alongside, (just listing a few), Stone Love, Bass Odyssey, LP, Merritone and Mighty Crown. From the sound the mixed cassette distribution was released in 1996 under Lion King Cassettes.In his drive to do more in the music business, and having production, mixing, management, promotions, and booking experience, he decided to work with Ras Shiloh by developing and launching his career. Credits are given to him under Melchezidek Muzik Records, with Ras Shiloh’s self titled cd, “Ras Shiloh & Idrens Chant” as well as other cd compilations such as Trojan Records/Sanctuary Collection, 24 Karat Gold Series- Shanachie Records, Shiloh B Records, Whodunit Records, Greensleeves Records and Redbud Records. He was also responsible for the production, concept and servicing of Ras Shiloh’s “Slavery” video. Throughout all of this, Mikey Assassin was still killing people with good music. His musical talent has brought him to California, Florida, Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, North Carolina, Jamaica, Bermuda, Trinidad, Bahamas and England. When not traveling, he was on numerous radio stations at different times like WLIB NY (1190am) Midday Mix Show, WNWK (105.9 fm), KMEL CA, 92 BEAT Radio CA, VIBZ FL, Medgar Evans College Radio Show NY and 94.3 Caribbean Power NY.Presently, Assassin has his own recording studio named Red Carpet. It’s a fully digital Pro Tools studio that specializes in Reggae, Hip Hop, House, Dance and R&B. Inside the studio you have producers, L’s, Noel Alphonzo and Phatta alongside Mikey. Artists that have passed through and have done production in Red Carpet are Luciano, Deyansa, Fankie Paul, Li’l Joe, Big Youth, Sluggy Ranks, Jr Kelly, Future Troubles, Terry Ganzie, Lutan Fyah, Willow Wilson, Bigga Haitian, Carlton Livingston, etc. Mikey is also responsible for some of the cd tracks and video of Rob Symeonn’s, “Chosen One” project and will be currently instrumental in the video for Symeonn’s next release. Under Red Carpet, there is a developing company named Selah Management that has artists on its roster such as Rob Symeonn, Tempa Don, Snipa Tac, Tata, Kashoya (Miss World) and Simpleman.Mikey Assassin is striving to be a complete multi media production package. His aim is to select artists with potential who will be willing to let the Assassin draw out the best out of that artist. He not only wants them to deliver lyrically, but to be able to entertain and interact with the crowd. A strong believer in work ethics and presentation is the reason why he has longevity in the business. Humble, not hype, straight forward in a non abrasive way, but yet still real is the path he chooses in building his production empire. As quiet as he may be in the studio for long hours working on different productions, it won’t be long before you hear or see his productions consistently on the airwaves worldwide.
