~VIDEO'S OF THE MONTH~SHAWNNA(born Rashawnna Guy on October 1, 1979 in Chicago, Illinois), was the first African American female artist signed to Def Jam, through Ludacris’ Disturbing Tha Peace Records. A former member of the female Chicago rap duo Infamous Syndicate (1998), Shawnna is known for her rapid fire delivery and her sexual tones. She is one of only two female rappers to ever have a #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 with 2003's "Stand Up" with Ludacris. She has released two solo albums, Worth Tha Weight and Block Music.~FAMILY:Shawnna's father is legendary blues and rock and roll guitarist, Buddy Guy (4x Grammy winner). She has 2 sons named Raishawn and Tyler Thompson and a daughter named Cameron. She also has a brother that produces under the name Ice Drake (Producer of Posted by Shawnna and Splash Waterfalls by Ludacris).~GROUP:Shawnna and Lateefa Harland made up the duo hip-hop group, Infamous Syndicate, whose debut record Changing the Game was released on July 2, 1999 on Relativity Records. This Twista-meets-Salt-n-Pepa album featured the smash hit “Here I Go“, which was the theme song for The PJ’s (T.V. show). Their first success came with the blaxploitation ballad "Jenny Jonez" which hit rotations in 1997. That led to the Relativity contract, and a European tour with LL Cool J and the Beatnuts. Infamous Syndicate also opened for Junior M.A.F.I.A.~SOLO:Before she recorded her first album, Shawnna was featured on the remix to the song “Loverboy” by Mariah Carey for the album/movie Glitter. She was featured in the video along with Ludacris, Da Brat, and Twenty II. Her most memorable performance to date was being featured on Ludicris’ “What’s Your Fantasy“ in October of 2000. Shawnna's debut album Worth Tha Weight, originally scheduled to be released in October 2002, was delayed until September 26th 2004 and was released with little promotion due to disputes at Def Jam. Her album was well-received by critics, and spawned the singles "Shake That Shit" and "Weight A Minute", which helped sell over 430,000 copies. Shawnna's sophomore album Block Music was released on June 27, 2006. The club favorite “Gettin Some“ hit #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 and gave Shawnna her first certified Platinum single. Shawnna’s second single off Block Music, entitled “Damn“, showed the sexy softer side of her music. Its sales have been initially lower than expected. The album has so far sold over 350,000 copies. In preparation of the album, Shawnna teamed up with Clinton Sparks, one of Rolling Stone's Top 10 mixtape producers, to release the official prelude to the album titled "Block Music: The Mixtape". This mixtape features exclusive tracks and freestyles as well as the official "Getting Some Head (All-Star remix)" featuring Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Jim Jones, Pimp C, Ludacris, Twista, Pharrell, Too $hort, Lil‘ Wayne, Dre (of Cool & Dre), Pitbull & Sean J (of Field Mob). She was also announced as Artist of the week on Hollyscoop.com and won the award for Chick of the Year (2006) at The 2nd Annual Dirty Awards hosted in Atlanta.~NEW:Remy Ma (female rapper & friend) reported that Shawnna had left the Super Female Group “3 Sum“ (also along side with Jacki-O) in late March. Shawnna recorded 10 tracks with Remy Ma and Jacki-O, but left because she reported that she didn’t like to be in an enclosed environment with females and didn’t want to ruin her relationship with Remy or Jacki. As of April 26th, 2007, in an interview, Shawnna confirmed that she was no longer with DTP, but remains friends with everyone on the label. Shawnna is happy to be an independent artist because it is something she has always wanted to do. Her third album is complete, but she wants to wait awhile before releasing it under a different label or the current independent label, HUSTLE. She also has two mixtapes that are to be released soon. Shawnna has been in the rap game since 1997 (longer than most female rappers), and she has told reporters that she wants to be a C.E.O. of her on record label. What’s next for the Queen of the Chi ?
