MARCÃLIO ONOFRE (b. February 7, 1982) is an active Brazilian composer, pianist and theorist. He studies composition with the Brazilian composer Dr. Eli-Eri Moura, and analysis with the French-Brazilian composer Dr. Didier Guigue. He is a member of GMT (Grupo de Pesquisa em Música, Musicologia e Tecnologia Aplicada - Research Group on Music, Musicology and Applied Technology) at the Federal University of ParaÃba. His works include pieces for solo, diverse chamber groups and orchestra, as well as music for theater plays. His concert music has been played in Brazil by Grupo Brassil, Arte Mulher Chamber Orchestra, ParaÃba Youth Symphonic Orchestra and João Pessoa Chamber Orchestra.
He won the “Best Sound Track†award in the VI Guaçuà National Theater Festival, Brazil (November 2005), and the “Best Sound Track†award in the XIII Guaramiranga Northeast Theater Festival, Brazil (September 2006). His piece Freedom for solo alto flute was played at the XVI Biennial Festival of Brazilian Contemporary Music, held in Rio de Janeiro, in November 2005. He has been active as a member of the “New Composers of ParaÃba Groupâ€, taking part in several of its concerts. Onofre's research main subject at GMT has been Luciano Berio's Sequenza IV. This research has been sponsored by CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico - Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development).
MarcÃlio Onofre has also performed with Log³, a contemporary music ensemble that uses laptops in live performances. Recently, he appeared with Log³ in a nationwide governmental event, in which musicians and dancers performed live, in real time, from three different Brazilian cities (João Pessoa, Salvador and BrasÃlia). In July 2006 he took part in the Cortona Contemporary Music Festival (Italy). His piece Three Miniatures, for solo flute, was played at the Cortona Festival by Mary Fukushima, American flautist. His piano solo work Estudo II won an honor award at the 7º Concorso Internazionale di Composizione per Strumento Solista (Udine, Italy, 2006). He was one of the six finalists of the ICC – International Composition Competition “PIANO 2006†(Zen-On Music, Tokyo - Japan), held on November 17th, 2006, with the Prélude I - La conscience de l'inimaginable, performed by Satoshi Inagaki, a distinguished Japanese pianist. He took part in the II Biennial of Brazilian Contemporary Music of Mato Grosso (November 2006).
Since 2007, MarcÃlio entered the progressive rock band Finnegans Wake as a composer and keyboardist. See Finnegans Wake page on Myspace.
MarcÃlio Onofre is currently enrolled in the Master of Music Composition program at the Federal University of ParaÃba – Brazil, under the guidance of Dr. Eli-Eri Moura.
