About Me

THE DODOS (formerly known as 'Dodo Bird') exhibit a sound shaped by the marriage of two periods in songwriter/guitarist MERIC LONG's musical history: 1) playing in rock/metal bands growing up in the suburbs and 2) playing and listening to old delta blues records in his post-adolescent years. In the fall of 2002, Meric opened for guitarist Paul Curreri who introduced him to the country blues style of finger-picking, played by Mississippi John Hurt, Leadbelly and later by John Fahey. Meric then adopted this style of playing into his repertoire, meshing that with the noise, electronic sounds and loops that he had developed in his earlier days. In the fall of 2005, to add syncopated percussion to accent the rhythmic patterns of his finger-picking, Meric recruited drummer LOGAN KROEBER. Logan's background in Santa Cruz metal band ENTRAGIAN made for the perfect fit. ************************************************************ ******************************************************* THE DODOS, known for their powerful live shows, have recently played dates alongside WovenHand, Akron Family, Adem & the Annuals, Man Man, Vetiver, Do Make Say Think, Britt Daniel, Richard Buckner, Dave Gillard, Laura Veirs, Alexi Murdoch and Irving, among others.

Here I am making The Dodos sound like Liars when they're probably closer kin to Animal Collective. Long's psych-folk-pop compositions are smart and tight and melodic and his hammer-handed, fleet-fingered acoustic attack always meets Kroeber's thumps halfway, awkward toe to toe, chin to chin, heat to intensity. And his voice is great. Warm and wobbly and familiar like a brother's or a best friend's. Except (or maybe mostly?) when he's yelling like an asylum escapee—anguished, near-inarticulate, tonsil-baring scream-sobs..." —Shake Your Fist******************************************************** ******************************************************* “With his contemplative lyrics, terrific songwriting and rich arrangements of vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, percussion and... trombone(!), Long more than makes good on the impressive promise he showed on his debut. Throughout the proceedings he exudes a warm charm and confidence and an occasional willingness to gently nudge the boundaries of the acoustic folk singer/songwriter terrain. Jeff Mangum and John Darnielle, set a place at the table for [The Dodos]!” —Aquarius Records***************************************************** ********************************************************** “Meric Long writes the kind of folk tunes that eschew virtuosity and excessive influence-dropping in favor of clear, compelling storytelling. Without a whiff of pretense, San Francisco’s Long digitally tinkers with the folk idiom just enough to sound relevant in an era of Conor Oberst and Sufjan Stevens—while never failing to use his songs as open-throated explorations of his own soul. With the addition of drummer Logan Kroeber, Long’s compositions have been freed up, adapting an almost Fahey-like modal drone on the recent Beware Of The Maniacs.” —Denver Onion******************************************************* ******************************************************** "…the looping current of finger-picked patterns and melodic instincts more acutely evoke Brit songwriters like Nick Drake and Tyrannosaurus Rex-period Marc Bolan. —Nate Cavallieri, SF Weekly****************************************************** ********************************************************* “[The Dodos]—the bill’s unsigned band—could be the trigger puller here, big rock ‘n’ roll movement and changes successfully managed with percussion, massive acoustic patterns and slight electronic augmenting.” —Chapel Hill Independent ************************************************************ *************************************************** “…definitely recommended for fans of Iron & Wine, Kings Of Convenience and Elliott Smith.” —Aquarius Records
