About Me

David Winogrond (drums and percussion) and Jack Chandler (woodwinds), first met while recording "New World Symphony" and "Sing, Sing, Sing" for David Winogrond’s album, “Pictures at an Existentialism”. David, then, introduced Jack to Arlan Schierbaum (piano) the day they recorded everything else on this album except "Exploding Watermelon Dream State" and "Imhotep". During this 2nd session, which was recorded in Arlan's house, Jack was in the attic, Arlan was in the living room, and David was in the laundry room. They had no visual connection... only headphones. Arlan ran various instruments through an old EchoPlex, which he fed into the headphones as he played. Arlan and Jack haven't seen each other since. Special guests on this album include John "Rabbit" Ritchie, a long-time veteran of the big band era, who was discovered playing the trombone for spare change near Broadway and 5th Streets in downtown Los Angeles; underground cult favorites Davie Allan (guitar) and Bruce Wagner (bass) of Davie Allan and the Arrows (David Winogrond also plays drums with the Arrows); and finally, D.J. Bonebrake on vibes (drummer with the proto-punk band X.) Their performances (and some of Arlan's) were added with a miraculous recording technique called "overdubbing", which is rarely employed in jazz. Arlan's overdubs on "New World Symphony" and "Sing, Sing, Sing" were e-mailed to David as MP3s and later mixed into the tracks. This music is, above all, cinematic music. Designed to inspire cinematic scenes and imagery in the listener's mind, it can also stand alone on its musicality or provide ambiance for whatever may be going on in the listener's immediate environment.“Pictures at an Existentialism” is available on Wondercap Records, which is owned and run by Chris Ashford. Chris started the first punk label in Los Angeles, What Records, which gave The Germs their start. The nucleus of the albums by David Winogrond is David and Jack Chandler. Forthcoming albums will have different personnel and vibes. The 2nd album will be released Feb 17, 2009.
