Few bands have created such an appealing and unique sound that crosses such a variety of musical genres as Los Angeles alt-rock standouts Beyond 7. Vocalist Greg Stoddard's evocative lyrics, backed by guitarist Brian Stewart's torrid guitar riffs, paint the backdrop for songs that are instantly memorable. Not ones to shy away from guitar anthems, the songwriting duo draw on the grandeur of U2 and the melancholy of Coldplay to craft bright, rolling pop that is at once both majestic and vulnerable. Indeed, you may have already heard Stoddard and Stewart’s well-crafted tunes in the Miramax film "Down to You" (which starred Freddie Prinze, Jr.), TV’s "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and the indie flick “No Pain, No Gain," or as the opening act for national touring bands like Gin Blossoms, Cheap Trick, Duncan Sheik, Joan Osborn, Eddie Money and Edwin McCain.
On their latest CD, “Smoke,†Beyond 7 creates soul stirring ballads ("Last Man in the World") and electrifying rockers ("Home") that recall likeminded hit makers Train and Vertical Horizon. The opening cut, "Light of Day," is a pop smart-bomb that catapults the listener into "Everything You Wanted," a song that marries a majestic and jarring guitar sound to the urgency and longing of Greg Stoddard's vocals. Another welcome departure is "Like It's Always Been," an introspective acoustic ballad of alienation with a Matchbox Twenty bent whose sweet, yearning lyrics sets the band's musical passion in even higher relief. Expanded sonic touches (piano, keyboards, acoustic guitar) showcase the band's musical sophistication throughout the disc. After previously working with top-flight producers Ron Nevison (KISS, Heart, Led Zepplin) and Jim Wirt (Incubus, LIVE, Something Corporate), the band produced their current EP themselves, filling the disc with ringing guitars and unforgettable vocal melodies.
