About Me

Born on Long Island, Genius moved to Buffalo New York before turning one. Raised in the Central Park area of the inner city of Buffalo he quickly learned that wisdom is a priceless commodity, and used it to stay out of trouble. Although moving to a nearby suburb before high school, he still stayed close to his roots spending many winter days, and summer nights on the same blocks he was raised on. Meanwhile his parents instilled in him strong values that kept him from falling into the pitfalls of the streets. While in the early years of high school he spent time in Inkster Michigan, just outside Detroit where he learned the art of emceing. His talent was premature, as he often attempted to rap about the street life that he had heard and seen, but knew little about. An early mentor, Scripts, attempted to help hone his potential by discussing technique. He adopted the name G-Wizz and this moniker stayed with him. After listening to Talib Kwelis Train of Thought/ Reflection Eternal he was convinced that this music style best suited his abilities. On one track Kwelis hook was "Where were you the day Hip Hop died..." and this permanently changed Genius attitude and motivation to attempt to keep what he felt was REAL music, REAL hip hop, from suffering the ultimate fate. After witnessing the decline of his music to the likes of "Laffy Taffy" and "Throw Some Ds On It" he was disturbed but felt helpless. In 2006 with the release of Nas "Hip Hop is Dead" Genius was bolstered to pick up where he left off. "Carry on Tradition" by Nas reminded him not to focus on the monetary benefit, but rather keeping the art form alive. He addresses racial issues as well as his own troubles in his lyrics. In addition, things witnessed in his travels such as the situation that still exists with blacks in urban America. Often called mental slavery. And of course the type of Hip Hop lyrics that critics say will breathe new life into it.At this juncture GMC has not reached mainstream yet. He resides in Cleveland Ohio but often returns to Buffalo and NYC to keep constant reminders. NYC being at the roots of the music he loves and writes, and although Buffalo is clearly not the center of the hip hop universe nor home to many real emcees, it still represents the love of family and friends that he hold so close to his heart. Even if he is not a household name by tomorrow, he will continue to carry on the tradition of Hip Hop. It is a task he is up for and worthy to carry the burden.
