In Boulder Colorado, the Afro Fusion sound of By All Means Band is bridging musical worlds. Their own variety of original music combines excellent songwriting with influences from modern African music and modern American music. There are West African elements to almost every original song, but you could also listen to it and convince yourself it was a funk song or a jazz song.
At first, audiences are a little thrown off by the new sound, but the vibe is inviting and contagious. It is rare to find a young group with such a stirring display of live energy.
The band features drummer and Ghana native, Paa Kow, who has shared the stage with African greats: Angelique Kidjo, Kojo Antwi, George Darko, Hugh Masekela, and Victor Wooten.
Paa Kow’s conga compliment—Atta Addo—demonstrates a very natural, flexible, dexterity.
Brothers Justin and Aaron Fichtner studied in Kumasi, Ghana with legendary palmwine guitar revivalst Koo Nimo and perform regularly in the University of Colorado's West African Highlife Ensemble.
Joel Timm studied trombone in Accra under Ayitey Appiah, Ghana's premier trombonist. His experiences in West Africa included sharing the stage with Ghanaian legend George Darko at a rally for Nana-Akufo Addo, 2008 Presidential candidate.
The evocative jazz saxophone of Alex Cazet is pure and well-recognized by listeners.
Innovative jazz bassist, Zac Flynn, provides the rhythmic and harmonic backbone with a powerful blend of African and American rhythms.
