Biography

Keita was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1982 and grew up in Nagasaki. He began playing drumset when he was 14 years old and studied in the Koyo Conservatory in Kobe, which is linked to Berklee College of Music. In Fall 2005, he won a scholarship and formally entered Berklee. While there, he switched his focus to hand percussion and studied with Manuel “Egui” Castrillo, Jamey Haddad, Tito De Gracia, David Rosado, and Mark Walker. As a student, Keita performed with many teachers including Danilo Perez, Fernando Brandao, Tiger Okoshi, Daniel Ian Smith, John Lockwood, Mark Walker, Jamey Haddad and performed a piece, “Azul” (Osvaldo Golijov), with Yo-Yo-Ma and the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston Symphony Hall. He graduated from Berklee in December, 2007. For now, Keita can be seen and heard playing around the Boston and New York area. Recently, Keita traveled to Rio De Janeiro, Brasil to study with several important percussionists including Jorginho do Pandeiro, Celsinho Silva, Kiko Freitas, and Marcio Bahia.
