Hi! My name is Sofia and my musical journey started when I was 11. I wanted to play the guitar so I took private lessons on classical and jazz guitar before taking up percussion. I studied percussion at the National Conservatory – Lisbon. Paralel, I studied drums at the Luis Vilas-Boas Jazz School – Hot Clube de Portugal and attended to percussion workshops concerning different instruments, genres and styles such as Brazilian, Indian, African, latin, portuguese traditional, jazz, medieval... I could not decide on any specialisation because every time I was sure about wich way to go, challenging proposals to play something completely different crossed my path, providing me the chance to play with musicians from almost all the music fields: Tocá Rufar, Wok, Dona Rosa, Gaiteiros de Lisboa, José Mário Branco, Amélia Muge (Portuguese); Gilberto Gil (Brasilian), Angela Frontera (Brazilian/Latin), Avalom Ensemble (medieval, celtic), Sete Lágrimas (Early Music), Netherlands Blazers Ensemble (Classic, Alternative, Experimental), Zappanoia (Rock), among others. I also recorded with some of these musicians and I really feel lucky for having the chance to play with musicians from diferent genres and cultures. I toured in Macau, U.K., Brazil, Germany, The Netherlands, Estonia, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Taiwan and Irland.

Presently I am studying composition at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. Some of my works have been performed by some of the school ensembles, as well as independent musicians and by the recently formed NOL - Nova Orquestra de Lisboa (Lisbon New Orchestra). I also teach Music Theory, give workshops focussing the portuguese traditional music and cooperate with an educational project for children. In this project I am responsabile for the artistic departement, and some of my classes are for both parents and children. In this classes we explore diferent art fields, building the bridge between music and plastic arts. So, besides working with children - wich is something I really like - I feel glad for confirming that all the time and money that I spent at the art school "ARCO" wasnt in vain. For contact / infos:
