About Me

Naomi Pinnock was born in 1979 and grew up in West Yorkshire, England. After moving to London in 1998, she studied at King’s College, London with Harrison Birtwistle. She subsequently gained a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Brian Elias, with additional support provided by the RVW Trust and a PRS Foundation Scholarship. Her studies were recently completed with Wolfgang Rihm at the Hochschule für Musik, Karlsruhe. In 2006 she was selected to attend the composition course in Royaumont, France with Brian Ferneyhough.Pinnock’s work first came to attention with Obstinare, which was written and first performed by the London Sinfonietta in 2003, and was awarded the Alan Bush Prize. It has subsequently received performances in Germany, France and the UK. The result of a collaboration with the poet W.N. Herbert was the 2007 work Nostos for soprano Lesley-Jane Rodgers and ensemble. This work led to a set of three pieces Nostos-ukuðr-Bewilder, with the second and third pieces receiving their premieres in Germany. Herbert will again be creating the text for a new work commissioned by Ensemble Lux in Austria, which will be premiered in August 2008. The author W.G. Sebald provided the inspiration for two works written in 2008 for commissions from Les Percussions de Strasbourg – Darkening again – premiered at the Festival les Musiques in Marseille and Interference written for The Curate’s Egg (female choir) and Melinda Maxwell (oboe) for the Spitalfields Festival in London. Pinnock has received commissions and performances from the Heidelberger Frühling Festival, Musica Festival, Festival les Musiques in Marseille, Spitalfields Festival, Bmic Cutting Edge, London Sinfonietta, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Ensemble Linea, Rambert Dance Company, Endymion, Pierre-André Valade, Sarah Nicolls and Rolf Hind. Her work has been performed throughout the UK and Europe, and has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Bayern 2 Radio. During the summer of 2007 she was an artist-in-residence at the USF Verftet in Bergen, Norway. Current commissions include a new work for the London Sinfonietta as part of their innovative Blue Touch Paper scheme.
