Co-Host, “Stylefest†and “NHRA Explode Sport Compact Racing Series†When ESPN 2 approached Amanda Amann about being the co-host for their popular drag racing programs “Stylefest†and “NHRA Explode Sport Compact Racing Series,†it was strangely enough a perfect match for the former MTV video jockey who had previously only hosted magazine entertainment shows. .
“I have two older brothers and I’m a daddy’s girl, so I absolutely love cars,†says Amann. “Instead of jewelry, I’m the girl that wants a car; instead of collecting shoes, I’d rather collect cars. So, it was a good fit.â€
One of the newest faces to grace the ESPN network, Amann is giving new life to a sport which for years has been dominated by white males. The first black female correspondent in the history of drag racing, Amann hasn’t only opened the door for new opportunities, but she’s also formed a special bond with fans and those involved in racing.
“The people that go to the races, the families, they’re really into it,†she explains. “A lot of the kids actually try to race go-carts and move up to professional go-carts, then to professional drag racing vehicles … [it’s] scary, but true.â€
Tapping into a different spectrum of media proved to be the perfect balance for the University of Maryland graduate of Trinidadian and Guyanese descent, allowing more exposure for her and the lifestyle of drag racing. A firm believer in paving the way for others to follow, Amann will continue to shine her light and inspire.
