Layout by CoolChaser Background from flickr userAm totally a rez girl and proud of it.. Hopiland is isolated..there is nothing modern..one has to be strong to make use of time that stands still....Life here on the reservation is tough, slow in pace and a million miles away from the outside world. I am from the Parrot/Cottonwood clan of Tewa village. My father came from Isleta Pueblo and my mother was Tewa. I was raised in a traditional Tewa home participating in the dances and ceremonies, speaking my native language and this is how I still live today. The death of my parents has been tuff. The world was so cruel and still is...people who you thought would be there could care less..its like being a dog that people kick around cuz no one will stand up for you like your mother would...just to have one more hug or smile or to hear them call my name is what i wish for...that is them impossible...I am so grateful for my grandma who took over as our mom. who never gave up hope on the four of us..I miss her so very much..her love, her cooking, her knowledge, her teachings...she was strong...she's the one who told me never to be ashame of who I am...and be proud of where you come from, even if we have nothing..we have love in the house...My biggest fear is our tewa language...it is slowly disappearing!!!! no one under the age of 40 can understand or speak it fluent anymore. Stressful!!I have one beautiful, spoiled 12 yr. old daughter Faylene, two brothers, one sister, seven nephews, four neices, four grand daughters, one handsome grandson, two dogs Gwaan and Betty and a cat named Kingston. Never a dull moment in our household.. Family is what life is all about..i love my family....they are all I have left...I still follow tradition and make my pottery the way my ancestors did hundreds and hundreds of years ago. I dig and process my own clay, make my paint brushes and paints from plants and the only tools I have are my hands, polishing stones dating back three generations, a piece of gourd to shape my pots and sheep manure for fuel. Many of my pottery can be found in galleries, museums and in homes of famous reggae artist...such as Frankie Paul, Michael Rose, David Hinds, Casper...just to name a few.I love the game of softball which I still play with my nephews and their wives. The thrill of running the bases fast (so I think I am) and getting that black diamond by your name is what its all about...but first of all you must hit the ball.... I also love to run...run...run... Running gives me a chance to think, relieve stress, to feel free, get a breath of fresh air.... but most of all to be healthy and live a long life.I hosted the weekly reggae radio show on Hopi radio called Rez Rasta Riddums. It was a wonderful journey that lasted seven years and I have now moved on. I am now producing my own reggae show for Native Voice 1. "Living In The Positive" is the name of the show and you know Sister Parrot will bring you the best of roots, rock, reggae...native stylee....so listen out...So reggae music i love to hear and the message that comes with it. Nasio Fontaine is my favorite artist and having met him at Reggae on the River....we will be forever connected...I found my native brother... he knew about my people and about Hopiland. My native brother who lives on the island of Dominica...Sister Parrot loves Nasio music......One more thing...look out world! There is a band that is so talented, young, energetic and very humble. LIVE WYYA is the band and they are the greatest and toughest band from Jamaica.....I enjoy the love my brothers share with me..all their positive vibes, their kindness and they even let me enjoy the east coast reggae vibes with them on tour last year along side Gregory Isaacs. You better believe it..I was cruising on his tour bus....Imagine this....Sister Parrot walking down Market Street in Philadelphia with the Cool Ruler..... BIG UP LIVE WYYA!!!! your the best...
