About Me

"Poetry is glimpses of the mind's imagination, whispers of the heart's meditation, samples of the soul's inspiration." –Sylvia L. Green

Evangelist Sylvia Larane Green (Chatman), poet/author of GIFT OF LIFE , is a gifted Christian and inspirational poet as well as a gospel songwriter and graphic designer, who owns the design, print, and publishing company, Distinguished Design and Publishing, www.ddesignpub.com . She has been composing inspiring verse for family, friends, and others for over 15 years. She began writing poetry in her late teens when she accepted Christ into her life and made a conversion over from creating secular rap lyrics. She has written many secular, inspirational, and religious poems—rhymed and unrhymed—though she is partial to rhyme. She is an avid reader and demonstrates passion for her writing.
Sylvia has published her works in various newsletters, For Crying Out Loud, The Greater Capital Area Journal, Cross and Quill, and Handmaidens Webzine; and newspapers, The Southern Digest and National African American News (NAAN). She has also read her poetry at numerous church programs (youth days, pastor Anniversaries, convocations, etc.), poetry readings at the John B. Cade Library of Southern University and A & M College, the Summer Youth Culmination program at the Riverside Centroplex Arena, and the Baton Rouge Art Gallery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Also, one of her favorite poems, "Gift to the Earth," is featured in the anthology, Gumbo for the Soul. For more information, visit www.gumboforthesoul.com . Additionally, she recently released her first book of poems, GIFT OF LIFE , which can be purchased at www.cafepress.com/sylvialg . She is currently working on her second collection, Spiritual Treasures. Sylvia strives for excellence in all of her endeavors.
Sylvia accepted Christ into her life and got baptized in the name Jesus at 15, receiving the Holy Ghost at 16 in Tabernacle of Prayer of New Orleans, Louisiana. When she was 17, her family moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and she joined Church of the Living God. For six years, she remained a faithful member, testifying, reciting poems for Youth Church, saying welcomes for church programs, witnessing and compelling people to come to church. She also labored in the following capacities: praise/worship leader; choir member; choir, youth, and Daughters of Zion secretaries; mistress of ceremony; editor of United Youth Digest newsletter; youth speaker; Bible Study teacher; and occasionally, Sabbath School teacher.
God called Sylvia to preach at 18 and began to use her in prophecy, discerning of spirits, and laying on of hands. The first message she delivered was "You Ought to Praise God" from Psalm 148:11-12KJV. At 20, the National Holy Convocation of the Church of the Living God, Inc. consecrated her as a missionary. She also served as their national Thanksgiving Committee chairperson for nine years.
Presently, Sylvia, fellowships at the First Church of the Living God of Amite, Louisiana. There, she has worked as assistant church and Sabbath School secretary, praise and worship leader, and mistress of ceremony. She currently serves as the Daughters of Zion (women's group) President. In March 2005, her pastor ordained her as an evangelist. She also currently serves as her church's Program Coordinator.
Sylvia is an anointed vessel that is on fire for God, knows the Word, has faith in God, and loves to pray and praise God. Her testimony is that God will keep you if you want you want to be kept, because God kept her from fornication (sex outside of marriage) for eight years, from age 15 to 23, until she married. Her favorite scripture is Isaiah 26:3KJV, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusted in thee." Sylvia truly is an example and inspiration to young people and women as well.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

I'd like to meet people who genuinely love God and His word; who have purpose and are passionate about life; who are ambitious; who inspire me; who I can learn wisdom from; who share my love for poetry, music and art; who aren't afraid to be different from the crowd; and most of all, who are down-to-earth and easy to talk to, yet have something meaningful to say.
