Skateistan - 18/06/08
With the ousting of the Taliban regime, western aid workers brought education, assistance and ....skateboarding to the Afghan people.
Two Australian aid workers and their photojournalist friend took their skateboards with them to Afghanistan and during their time off carved up the Kabul pavement. And it wasn't long before locals started showing up to watch them and began asking for a go.
As Oliver Percovich, Sharna Nolan and Travis Beard showed the local Afghan kids how to skate, they also noticed how new friendships were formed, bridging ethnic divides, and founded the Skateistan project.

Sustainable Biofuel Production in Australia - 12/06/08
With fuel prices steadily rising, biofuels have been heralded as the answer to the world's oil crisis, while at the same time they're being blamed for the destruction of rainforests and food riots around the world.
But not all biofuel production is bad. Science is getting serious about creating the next generation of biofuels. The focus is on non-food crops, and technology that can use waste paper and wood from agriculture and forest industries. Biofuels "2.0" is being developed in places like Australia so that supply can meet future demand - sustainably.

Dangerous Art - 11/05/08
Three artists taking part in this year's Transmediale festival in Berlin have been risking broken ribs, chopped off fingers, and radiation poisoning—all for the sake of making an artistic point about contemporary culture. And it's proved to be surprisingly popular with the public.

Critics Say DNA Swapping Infringes on Civil Liberties - 21/03/08
In the latest wave of trans-Atlantic security measures, the United States and Germany have agreed to share data like fingerprints and DNA in what they say is a move to prevent terrorist attacks and to combat organized crime. In international criminal investigations, data is currently shared on a case-by-case basis by official legal request. Under the new system of data exchange, each country can send fingerprints to be cross-referenced with the other's database. If there's a match or "hit", the querying country must then make a legal request for further identifying data. But this latest agreement has again provoked debate about personal privacy and infringement of civil liberties in the face of heightened surveillance.
