Maaike Poorthuis (Mezzo-soprano) studied at the conservatory’s of Enschede and Leeds (England)
In 2001 she graduated with honors from the Second Phase Solosinging at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague under Meinard Kraak.
In 2002 she received the certificate for De Nieuwe Opera Academie.In 2001 together with pianist Annemieke Spoelstra she was a finalist in the Concours International de Chant de Nadia et Lili Boulanger, Paris.She followed masterclasses among others with Elly Ameling, Roberta Alexander, Cora Canne Meijer, Graham Clark, Marc Tucker, Nancy Argenta and Nelly Miricioù.She has performed regularly with orchestras such as Het Gelders Orkest, Het Orkest van het Oosten, Het Brabants Orkest, Musica ad Rhenum, Florilegium Musicum, and The Northern Consort, and worked with conductors as Arjan Tien, Ivan Anguelov, Rudolph Werthen, Jed Wentz, Jaap van Zweden and Paul McCreesh.
With Het Tilburgs Begeleidingsorkest under Pieter Cox she sang Berlioz’ Les Nuits d’été.A frequent recitalist and concert performer, her oratorio repertoire includes Handel's Messiah, the Pergolesi Stabat Mater, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bach’s Matthew Passion, and Saint-Saëns’ Oratoire de Noel. Among other works, her recital repertoire includes Shostakovich’s Spanish Songs, Britten’s Tit for tat, and songs by Hahn, Poulenc and Sibelius.Operatic roles include a.o. Albert Herring (B. Britten), Il Matrimonio Segreto (D. Cimarosa), Mariken z Nimègue (B. Martinu), Le Nozze di Figaro, Cosi fan tutte (W.A. Mozart), Dido & Aeneas (H.Purcell), Suor Angelica (G. Puccini), Il Trionfo dell’Onore (A. Scarlatti), L’Enfant et les Sortilèges (M. Ravel), Nabucco (G. Verdi).
