Afrikan History Week is an annual cultural festival, focusing on Afrikan history and culture, in a modern and refreshing way. The festival is managed by representatives from a cross-section of Afrikan communities in Norway. The objective of Afrikan History Week is to shed light on “hidden truths†about the history and culture of Afrikan people internationally through music, poetry, films and panel discussions. Without compromising the content, the festival seeks to attract an “urban†audience and make history relevant within a contemporary context.
AFRIKAN HISTORY CELEBRATES ITS 5TH ANNIVERSARY
This year AHW is celebrating its 5th anniversary with "Civilisation" as a festival theme. The African continent has always been presented as the â€black stone†of colonies, poverty, violence and slavery. This year AHW wants to put the spotlight on African civilisation(s) by presenting a critical evaluation of the challenges Africa faces today through history, arts, music, poems and stories. (by bringing an approach that focuses on Africa's achievements through the centuries and in the present.) Through History, arts, music, poems, storytelling and film AHW is presenting a wide and rich program to the public . Please se below for details.
THE AFRIKAN COMMUNITY IN NORWAY
The first Afrikans came to Norway in the 1600’s, mostly through Norway’s (underexposed) involvement in enslavement and genocide in West Afrika and the Caribbean. The Afrikan community today is mainly a result of recent immigration from Afrikan countries and the Americas. The community counts app. 50.000 people, and a majority are youth under 25 years of age. Although the festival is open to everyone, it seeks particularly to respond to the needs of the largely ignored and under-exposed Afrikan community.
THE FESTIVAL: VISIBLE-INVISIBLE
The festival, operating under the slogan "Visibly-Invisible" was first introduced in 2005, after several smaller activities and has had the pleasure of presenting a wide variety of artists and speakers, including Osibisa (UK/GH), dead prez (USA), Pops Mohamed (SA), Molefi Kete Asante (USA), Lemn Sissay (UK), Kalamashaka (KE), Kat Francois (UK), Zubz (SA), Noora (NO), Jaqee (SE), Best Kept Secret (UK), Andrew Mohammad (UK), Benji Reid (UK), Gloria Rolando (CU), Owen 'Alik Shahadah (BA), Haile Gerima (USA/ETH) and many more.
In 2008, the 10 day festival will have "Diaspora" as the underlying theme. The festival will celebrate great achievements of some of the many Afrikan Diaspora communities around the world by presenting great poets, rappers, singers, dancers, speakers, musicians and films over 10 days; 21 May to 1 June 2008.
