DJ Perplex (2007 Australian DMC Champion)
1. Where did your DJ name come about?
It came from graffiti, back when I was much younger.
2. Describe your style?
I cut it up fresher than the rest! I come at it with a professional approach and everything I do has to be the best. I love it and I am interested in pushing the boundaries and being as original as I can with turntablism and DJing in general.
3. Favorite gig you've ever done?
The last two DMC World Finals have been great. Last year I think it really stepped up. Everyone in the night show (final 12) bought their A game and threw down some dope routines. It was at a new venue that was really nice. There was a huge crowd keen to see the worlds best get busy. Another memorable gig was the NYE just past playing with Chromeo and Spank Rock!
4. Name your favorite track that's guaranteed to fill the floor?
That’s a hard one… Spank Rock-Booty.
5. Wax, CD's or Serrato? Why?
Down here, for club DJing, a lot of people I know are using Serato and Torq more than CD-J’s. DJing and the whole music industry is going through a digital revolution right now. The digital technologies are becoming much more prevalent making the art form more dynamic. I think it’s great; it’s evolution you know. Two turntables and a mixer is the format, now they are taking that to the next level. In time, people will adopt and it will be more Media J’ s than your traditional disk jockey. I cant wait there’s crazy stuff being developed at the moment.
6. Are you a full time DJ?
Yes right now I am.
7. Name some of you favourite DJ's?
My man DJ B.Two, DJ A Trak, DJ Kentaro, DJ Jred, C2C, DJ Netik , DJ Troubl, Iemerg, Dj Ransom, DJ Rafik and Birdy Nam Nam.
8.What is the craziest thing to happen to you behind the decks?
Probably seeing Funky Bastardi come out at the 2006 World teams finals with hoods and hocky masks on. The story goes like this…
There were two crews both from France and both entering in the Team battle (where DJ teams of up to 4 dudes go at it). Scratch Science won in France and went on to the world finals. The other team, Fresh-Dope came second. They felt so strongly they could of won they drove out to Rome and entered under a different name Funky Bastardi, posing as an Italian team! Both Teams ended up battling against each other in London. In a dramatic twist, Funky Bastardi all came out on stage with black hoods on and wearing hockey masks! Some how they a had gotten hold of the same records Scratch Science used in there intro routine and dissed them with it. The Scratch Science guys were pretty pissed, and so were DMC when it all came out. It was an ingenious way of throwing your opponent off and I gave Fresh-Dope extra points for bringing that gangster edge the world finals!
9. Most hated Celebrity?
Paris Hilton
10. Favorite Movie?
Right now I really like Juno. It’s a bit different. All time favorite movie has got to be the Blues Brothers.
11. Any other interests apart from DJing?
Photography. I take a lot of pitchers. Especially last year. I’ve done a lot of travel photography. In countries like Spain, France, Italy and Morocco. Seeing all these different cultures on the other side of the world is a big inspiration for me.
12. Stupidest thing you have ever done whilst under the influence of alcohol?
I don’t really drink that much but back in the day I crashed my brothers new mazda into a camel…
13. Plans for the future?
More battling. Im working on my 2008 DMC routine right now. That’s going to take up a lot of my time for the rest of the year really. I also just started a Electronic music production course at SAE. I call it beat school, its really helping me to get my stuff sounding extra fat!
13. Get your promo on...
I gota mixtape coming soon called ‘Ears up’ and I have a mash up record out right now that you can go cop. Its call Mudbutt Mash Ups and its available throw out Australia and you can also order copies from the Mudbutt myspace- myspace.com/mudbuttmashups
Cheers Perplex
****UNFORTUNATELY HOODED INK DJ CONNECT AS BEEN DELAYED FOR THE TIME BEING, PLEASE KEEP COMING BACK BECAUSE WE WILL BE RUNNING IT SHORTLY!!!****
Generally there is a bridge between Australian/New Zealand Hip Hop artists and our local nightclub/venue DJ’s. Artists claim that they do not get the opportunity to get there music played, and DJ’s claim not to receive enough quality material. Hooded Ink is putting an end to this drama, by creating a common solution.
Hooded Ink has recently developed the ‘Hooded Ink DJ Connect compilation’. This is a compilation made up of strictly Australian/New Zealand artist tracks that will be sent out to Hip Hop DJ’s around both territories on a regular basis.
Track selections will be made by staff at Hooded Ink, which consists of Band/Group/Solo Managers, Media/Journalists, Event Managers and Music Industry professionals.
Our vision for this project is to establish a strong relationship between Australian/New Zealand DJ’s and Australian/New Zealand artists. ‘Hooded Ink DJ Connect’ will give artists a chance to have their music played in some of Australia and New Zealand’s top Hip Hop and RnB venues, an opportunity that seemed difficult until recently.
Tracks do not have to be exclusive and mixtape tracks will also be accepted. We will also send out feedback form, for DJ’s to fill out, to give opinions on their favourate tracks, all feedback will be sent to the artists in question (good or bad).
