Faith, hope and rock ‘n’ rollNot three things you’d immediately associate with each other, but with Onehundredhours, they merge into one story, one sound.
They started by accident, a one-off gig that led to their first tour in California, but the Grand Design is evident since then: 2 independent releases selling more than 16,000 copies with no major label distribution or support, and 2 releases with Survivor Records described as “anthemic,†“blistering†and “something of a masterpiece.†Their hectic touring schedule has taken them all over the UK, as well as to Hungary, Norway, Finland, Holland, Denmark, South Africa, Romania, Canada, India and Australia plus several tours in the United States; and hundreds of gigs in front of tens of thousands with a live experience often described as simply ‘life changing’. The Spring of 2005 saw them release their promotional single and video, ‘King of Every Heart’ as they opened for Daniel Bedingfield on his massive UK/European tour by personal invitation of the artist. The Hours followed Daniel's tour with two headline club tours selling out the London Metro twice as well as other venues nationwide.
Believing that a lifestyle of faith demands action, the band, in partnership with the iThemba AIDS Foundation, founded engagehivaids.com in April 2004. Engagehivaids.com is a web-based community created to raise awareness for the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa. The band’s heart is to inspire, challenge and resource young people to live their lives with justice, hope, action and love at the core.
The key to the passion that drives the band is hinted at in their name. Taken from the book, The Other Hundred Hours by Wyn Fountain, it’s the story of real faith that lives in the real world. Of the 168 hours in each week, around 56 are spent sleeping, and, as the author points out, it’s hard to do more than 12 hours a week in religious meetings. That leaves 100 hours for everything else: work, studies, friends, family, entertainment, everything… Too often, faith is relegated to a few hours of meetings in a church building… and according to Tre Sheppard, lead singer and guitarist of the band, Onehundredhours wants more to their faith and more to their lives:
“Faith is the reason, definitely. We really believe that hope and love can be found in Jesus. And we’re not afraid to say it. But at the end of the day, we’re a rock n roll band too… and the music carries the hope, explores the doubts and provides a little common ground for all of us to encounter the miracle in the everyday. We don’t expect everyone to agree with us… but we do hope they experience something in the music that challenges some assumptions and helps them to encounter the love of God. And hopefully the heart and the passion of that experience will bring us all a little closer to one another and a little closer to grace.â€
