London Guardian Review:
Dempsey Dempsey
(Output Recordings) ****
In downtown LA, an intoxicated Willie Nelson lays in the back seat of a Chevrolet, singing as a fuzzy symphony of trip-hop, jazz, funk and classic rock spills from the radio.
This is the fantasy that Dempsey - aka Geoff McIntire - seeks to make real. The first half of his album, subtitled Sunrise, is hopeful and warm.
ODB on the Run tells the tale of Wu-Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard in the style of a Quincy Jones soundtrack, shrill sirens melting into mellow funk.
The mood remains retro throughout, from the comforting analogue hiss to the squelchy guitar of Lil Poon Tang that recalls the Faces.
But the lyrics, samples, scratches and distortion reflect a pioneering spirit.
"You're a drive-by hit and run, you're the drug I must be on," Dempsey sings on What You Going on About, before turning to death for the alt.country swan song Sweet Fanny Adams.
As the mood darkens with the wistful jazz of Blue and the bitterness of Xtacy Pie, Dempsey proves to be a knockout. (Betty Clark)

DEMPSEY AND THE DC9S
8 Days of Rain
Release Date: 26/05/2008
Having left his native new york and found his way to london in 2000,
Dempsey released his debut album 'sunrise / sunset' on output in 2002,
Working with kieran Hebden and Trevor Jackson to produce a handsome brew of east coast americana and 21st century beats to a healthy dose of critical acclaim.
Now Dempsey returns with a three track ep that replaces Hebden's beats and bass with the live rumble of new backing band the dc9's,
He keeps the fires of bluesy rock 'n' roll burning bright with mid tempo, stomping lead track '8 days of rain'.
b side 'your touch' slows things down with swirling atmospherics, adding a mystical air to the proceedings,
Dempsey's songs create a big and fresh sounding alex chilton-like fusion.
