About Me

I’m currently appearing with Maria Friedman at the Menier Chocolate Factory near London Bridge. I have orchestrated In Buddy’s Eyes from Sondheim’s Follies especially for the show.Coming soon, Get Stuffed, The All You Can Eat Musical. A new show that I have written all by myself. Watch this space.I studied at the Royal Academy of Music. I have performed with musicians like Joe Thompson, John Etheridge, Paul Cavaciuti,Tom Hooper, Dave Gordon, Anita Wardell, Jaqui Dankworth, John Dankworth, Dave Colton, Trudy Kerr, Paul K, Tom Cawley, Stacey Dawson, Bosco Doliveira, Spike Robinson, Craig Schneider, Paul Pace, Liam Noble, Steve Waterman, Matt Wates, Dimitri Vassilakis, Christian Garrick, Michael Garrick, Martin Shaw, Billy Cobham, Martin Wheatley, Eddie Harvey, Tony Kinsey, Trudy Kerr, Martin Hathaway, Alan Jackson, Pete Hurt, Nick Durcan, Mick Foster,Keith Nicholls, Bob Hunt, Arturo Zabaglione and many others. Recently released an album with the Paul Moylan / Dominic Ashworth Duo which has received complimetary reviews. "The contrasts he employs are many and varied, even when playing bowed bass - compare the wailing, almost speechlike arco on "Devil Woman" with his jauntier, fox-trotting bowing on "Crazy Rhythm", which minds us not just of Slam Stewart, but also Paul Chambers…" Jazz Review. "…pleasingly lyrical…" "Compelling." Jazz Uk. I have taught on Mike Garrick’s Jazz academy courses for 18 years and also taught at the Guildhall and at the Purcell School. On the non Jazz front I have been heavily involved in musical theatre as a writer, composer and performer. Last summer Paul appeared with his cousin Sarah Desmond at the Edinburgh Fringe performing the risque titled "Playing With Myself". The show was written by Sarah, her mother Kathy, my mother Dianna and me. I wrote all the music. I have also written six other musicals including a version of Caucasian Chalk Circle. I have also performed in many West End shows including a four year sentence in Oliver! and a delightful nine months in Oklahoma! I also appeared in Into the Woods, the world premiere os Sondheim’s Saturday Night and have depped (subbed) in many other shows. I have also musically directed many shows with amateur performers including Oliver! and Annie at the Hackney Empire and as resident MD for "Into Sondheim" a Milton Keynes based group, performing Into the Woods, Assassins, Sunday in the Park With George and currently preparing Merrily We Roll Along.I also play "World Music" a term I hate almost as musc as "organic" food. Where else did the music come from eh! I have performed in Klezmer ensembles including being a founding member of Gregori Schecter’s Wandering Few. I have played with the superb Stewart Curtis’ groups, Shir and Shekoyakh. I also have performed with the Solomon Sisters with their Yiddish cabaret show. I have played with Szapora for many years and appear with many groups along side Dave Kelbie providing the "Balkan Underlay" for many different groups. The fantastic Robert Preston in "Trouble" from "The Music Man".

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Dominic Ashworth, Michael Garrick Quartet, Charleston Chasers, The Dawkins Code.
Influences: Mingus, Stravinsky, Sondheim, Gershwin, Beethoven.
Sounds Like: According to a cellist at the Royal Academy of Music "like a train". I was never sure whether it was a good thing not. Probably not as we were playing Mozart whose music is not overly endowed with train like effects.

Doctor Who

What a load of old toss. I couldn't believe it. Splashed with weak religious imagery, superbly overacted by John Sim, unbelievable plot. I really thought the last episode was awful. What with the ridi...
