Our Reviews
This was a total surprise to us, an absolutely cracking folk-rock album with a conceptual narrative thread through the songs and a heart-felt sense of injustice evident throughout.
You might think an album about a rebellion five centuries ago might be inaccessible to the casual listener, but that’s definitely not the case. The album is a well produced set of folk-rock songs with modern instrumentation and the ear for an attractive melody. You could listen to this as a great set of energetic folk-rock songs with the story gradually becoming more apparent as you listen. The songs are textured with differing layers of instrumentation, excellent vocal arrangements and wonderful playing. This is an album that we should all hear about. The album’s musical adaptation of our social history in a highly enjoyable way, give this an added quality we don’t hear often.
There are a range of musical styles too, from swirling folk-rock, acoustic ballads, string based classical songs, hymns but all bought together in a cohesive way. The extracts we provide below evidence this, the band know how to write and arrange songs to draw the listener in. There is an emotional connection the album makes too, you feel a growing empathy with Robert Kett and his followers. We feel a sense that the authorities do not listen sufficiently to the population or truly represent their interests and that they will crush unauthorised forms of representation. Clearly there are direct parallels many of us may draw between 1549 and today.
We’re proud to distribute the album; it’s what we’re here for. Such music deserves all of our support. In addition, it’s a wonderful listen that we’re sure you will return to many times. When this album arrived we had not heard of this artist before. 1549 is a duo of Andy Walker and Rob Duhig with guests who are here with their debut album released in 2007. This was a total surprise to us, an absolutely cracking folk-rock album with a conceptual narrative thread through the songs and a heart-felt sense of injustice evident throughout.

Bit Pogue-ish, bit Jethro Tull – hat’s off to you! A real achievement

t's good, very good. It's hard to keep the interest going through a concept album but 1549 manage it very well. No longeurs and enough detail in the arrangements to satisfy even the most churlish.

What a stirring presentation - it put me in mind of the evening I saw “Les Miserables†in the West End of London. I can’t find words to describe adequately my appreciation of the production of your CD.

The writing and musicianship is excellent. The music conjures up a wealth of images and feelings relating to the rebellion, yet remains entertaining as a purely listening experience. I look forward to future recordings.
