About Me

A Brief History of 1549
Although playing and recording together since they met in the late 1990's it was only in 2006, when writing started for a Folk/Rock Opera about Kett's Rebellion of 1549, that Andy and Rob decided to give themselves a band name.
The Folk/Rock Opera "Rebellion" was released in May 2007 to wide critical acclaim, and quickly established itself as a CD with that appealed across a wide musical spectrum. The CD and the band were featured in many newspapers as well as on BBC radio and Folkcast.
The CD is available for sale now (see below)You can now enjoy listening to ten featured tracks above, please let us know what you think.

A Brief History of Robert Kett
When Wymondham Abbey was dissolved in 1538, Robert Kett, a yeoman farmer and tanner, campaigned against the greed of the royal agent Flowerdew, to save parts of the Abbey Church for the town. At the time of the annual fair in July 1549, the grievances of the poor came to a head, especially regarding the the enclosure of the common land by the gentry. Kett agreed to lead a protest march against such injustices. Eventually, 15,000 joined his camp ..hold Heath. A petition was sent to the King requesting reforms and social justice.
The government ordered the camp to disperse. Kett refused, believing no crime had been committed. When the city of Norwich closed its gates to the camp, the rebels broke in at Bishop’s Bridge and took control of the city. Eventually, a large royal army arrived which defeated the rebels at the Battle of Dussindale on 27 August, killing 3,000 of Kett’s followers. Kett was hanged as a traitor from Norwich Castle walls on 7 December.
Kett’s Rebellion drew attention to the plight of the poor and it’s leader gave them a voice at a time when they had none.
Pageants, Mystery plays and music were very much part of Kett’s world. This CD is a poignant and moving tribute to a great man and a remarkable event in Norfolk’s history.

Our Reviews
This was a total surprise to us, an absolutely cracking folk-rock album with a conceptual narrative thread through the songs and a heart-felt sense of injustice evident throughout.
You might think an album about a rebellion five centuries ago might be inaccessible to the casual listener, but that’s definitely not the case. The album is a well produced set of folk-rock songs with modern instrumentation and the ear for an attractive melody. You could listen to this as a great set of energetic folk-rock songs with the story gradually becoming more apparent as you listen. The songs are textured with differing layers of instrumentation, excellent vocal arrangements and wonderful playing. This is an album that we should all hear about. The album’s musical adaptation of our social history in a highly enjoyable way, give this an added quality we don’t hear often.
There are a range of musical styles too, from swirling folk-rock, acoustic ballads, string based classical songs, hymns but all bought together in a cohesive way. The extracts we provide below evidence this, the band know how to write and arrange songs to draw the listener in. There is an emotional connection the album makes too, you feel a growing empathy with Robert Kett and his followers. We feel a sense that the authorities do not listen sufficiently to the population or truly represent their interests and that they will crush unauthorised forms of representation. Clearly there are direct parallels many of us may draw between 1549 and today.
We’re proud to distribute the album; it’s what we’re here for. Such music deserves all of our support. In addition, it’s a wonderful listen that we’re sure you will return to many times. When this album arrived we had not heard of this artist before. 1549 is a duo of Andy Walker and Rob Duhig with guests who are here with their debut album released in 2007. This was a total surprise to us, an absolutely cracking folk-rock album with a conceptual narrative thread through the songs and a heart-felt sense of injustice evident throughout. Bit Pogue-ish, bit Jethro Tull – hat’s off to you! A real achievement Sue Johnson - Journalist
t's good, very good. It's hard to keep the interest going through a concept album but 1549 manage it very well. No longeurs and enough detail in the arrangements to satisfy even the most churlish. Bernie Forkin - Player 1 Management
What a stirring presentation - it put me in mind of the evening I saw “Les Miserables” in the West End of London. I can’t find words to describe adequately my appreciation of the production of your CD. Grace Bowers - Descendant of Robert Kett
The writing and musicianship is excellent. The music conjures up a wealth of images and feelings relating to the rebellion, yet remains entertaining as a purely listening experience. I look forward to future recordings. Mick Green - Customer
