Before the 1800's, I was home to the Ohlone/Castanoan and Esselen tribes of California. Later, i was owned by two men, David Jacks and James Bardin. These two men owned me as well as other land throughout the Monterey Peninsula. After Bardin passed away, his children and grandchildren sold his land. I was sold to John Armstrong where I was used for farming and grazing. During the 1900's I had several nicknames, "Bardin", "Locke-Paddon", and "Paddonville". The last two nicknames come from my owner William Locke-Paddon. During 1918, the Southern Pacific Railroad started laying down tracks in and around my area. Locke-Paddon convince the railroad company to create a flag stop so that he could interact and gain customers from San Francisco. During this time, he changed my name to Marina. He then started started schools, churches, and other necessities to create an organized community. Through his efforts, I became established in 1918. The next year, my first post office opened up. During the 1930's to 1950's my lands began to prosper with residents, as did the rest of my surroundings. More schools and churches began to open up, as well as businesses and the Community Center. In 1956 the first fire station opened up. One of my main roads, Reservation Road, also became a thriving business area, and has remained so throughout the years. In the 1970's I was voted upon three times to become a city. The first two were a let down, but the third voting, in 1975, passed, and I became an incorporated city as well as the newest member to Monterey County.
