Joakim Sundström is a Swedish sound designer. He is a regular collaborator of British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom and has worked on his last 10 productions, including 24 Hour Party People (2002), In This World (2002), Code 46 (2003), 9 Songs (2004), Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story (2005), The Road to Guantánamo (2006), A Mighty Heart (2007), Genova (2008) and The Shock Doctrine (2009). Sundström's projects to date are characterised by a strong sense of diversity and innovation, ranging from Fernando Meirelles's Oscar winning drama The Constant Gardener (2005), to The Brother's Quay's surrealist fairytale The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes (2005). Other films include Kevin Macdonald's BAFTA winning Touching The Void (2003), Sally Potter's lambic pentameter Yes (2004), Stephen Kijak's award winning documentary Scott Walker: 30 Century Man (2006), Josh Appignanesi's directorial debut Song Of Songs (2006), Stephen Frears Cheri (2009), Gideon Koppel's distinctive and powerful documentary Sleep Furiously (2009) and Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank (2009). He is currently working on a Michael Winterbottom adaptation of the Jim Thompson noir classic The Killer Inside Me (2010) starring Casey Affleck.
He was nominated for a BAFTA for The Constant Gardener (2006), two MPSA Golden Reels for Touching The Void (2003) and The Constant Gardener (2006), a British Independent Film Award for In This World (2002) and an International Press Academy Golden Satellite Award for Code 46 (2003). Born in the Baltic city of Gefle in the north east of Sweden, he currently lives in London.
