About Me

Thomas David Roe was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 9,1942. At thirteen, he discovered the guitar: a major turning point. He learned to play the guitar from his father who taught him three chords. Then he began to also write. In his senior year, Tommy came out of his musical shell and formed a band, which to his surprise became quite popular. After graduatiion the band continued to play dances and amateur shows, while Tommy worked full time as a technician for General Electric. Then, in 1962, at the age of 19, the break came. He was signed to Felton Jarvis and Bill Lowery to ABC Records, and taken to Nashville to record. His first record was "Sheila": a song written when Tommy was fourteen. It was an instant success and within 30 days had climbed to the top of the national charts. He admits he was lucky. "Shelia" sold well over a million copies. He served 8 months as a medic at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and then returned to his career. Tommy continued to record and make the charts but there were no spectacular hits until he recorded "Sweet Pea" in 1966. After "Sweet Pea" the hits followed back to back; "Hooray For Hazel", "It's Now Winter's Day", and the No.1 song in the country, "Dizzy", written in collaboration with Freddy Weller. His output both as a writer and singer has been staggering. He has recorded over 70 single releases at least 30 made the charts. He has had a dozen sides in the top ten and four one million sellers. All this activity has combined to produce the current musical phenomennon, Tommy Roe; the ultimate in "bubblegum". Tommy believes in himself and in his music. He feels that an entertainer's job is to entertain, not to become involved in controversy. And,he believes he is giving his audience what they want; an uncontestable fact in view of his tremendous popularity. He attributes his longevity to the basic simplicity of his music and styling. He has maintained his basic musical formula through the years, and he sees no reason to change. He charaterizes himself as a "family type"singer, appealing for all age groups. Tommy Roe joined Where The Action Is in 66 and also did the Dick Clark Caravan of the Stars tours. In 1986 he was inducted into Atlanta, Georgia's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He does the oldies tours with his good friends Bobby Vee, Chris Montez, Brain Hyland and many others. Catch him at a concert if you can. He puts on a great show. Tommy Roe is still active in recording. If you want to contact on where to reach him for a concert, here is the link:http://www.marstalent.com/bio_tommy_roe.htm
