The fun began 5 years ago in a small, now-defunct venue in Chelsea called "Climate 8". The founders of Sholay Productions, Ashu Rai, Atif Toor, and Rajesh Parwatkar felt a dance party featuring an eclectic mix of bhangra-bollywood-house music would be the perfect antidote for queer South Asians feeling marginalized in post 9-11 New York City.
With Ashu Rai at the turntables and Bollywood visuals projected on the walls, 350 partygoers experienced a milestone in NYC club history—a regular queer South Asian dance party called Desilicious . The eclectic crowd included club kids, Pakistani drag queens dressed as Indian film starlets, shirtless Chelsea boys, and queer South Asians who could finally call a club space their own.
Since then, Desilicious has grown to become a monthly dance party attracting hundreds of revelers from all over the world and featuring themes inspired by Indian pop culture, fashion, and politics. Memorable themes include the annual Wet Sari Contest, "Night of 1000 Aishwaryas" inspired by Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai, and "Axis of Pleasure" in collaboration with the Gay and Lesbian Arab Society. Since December 2006,Desilicious has found a new home at 150 Varick Street, which also houses the legendary Club Shelter, a party that celebrates music and diversity.
