About Me

It was right from an early age that my fascination with music began, and it mainly started with me tuning into different radio stations to hear all kinds of music been played from all over the world, and even then the strange signals that you got from an untuned radio was just as fascinating to me as the music, because to me it was an interesting sound, and I guess from then on my interest in sound and electronics grew. My first experiences of been creative with music was through mixing tapes together of recorded music, to create a sort of collage of sounds and interesting bits of songs and random stuff recorded off the radio and from movie soundtracks, it never occured to me that this was in fact a form of production in a very basic way. I never had piano lessons, or learnt to read music, but I don't feel that this has ever been an obstacle to me, as I've always wanted to go somewhere with music that no one else has been, and this is why I am very experimental, I've written music in some of the most strangest ways before now. So eventually this all lead up to me beginning to write my own music at the age of 16, and my very first recording was made with my own improvised percussive instruments that consisted of a jam jar lid (made a popping sound), a pepper corn mill for shaking, a metal door panel that chimed, and things to bang on, along with hand claps and my voice, and with the assistance of my then 6 year old brother who is now also a musician, I made my first recording, and it even had stereo! so it was like hearing sounds of someone cooking in stereo, lol. I did eventually aquire a keyboard, but it was just a toy one, but once again I improvised and this time managed to create my first studio, utilising, toy keyboard, Double cassette decks, and another tape machine, to provide the multitracking of arrangements, and the speaker wires from the keyboard were connected to the auxillary socket on the back of the tape machine, along with the other tape deck so all the sound went into the double tape deck. Any way many years I spent wandering in the middle of nowhere with music, untill in 2002 I had the opportunity through a sort of open learning course to use a proper recording studio to record my music, and this year I really began to get a feel for music, it was a real highlight for me and kind of a turning point where I realised that perhaps it was something I could pursue in a more serious manner, even though I knew just how much further I'd need to go after that, none the less this is where it all began in a way. From that year onwards my development of music began to take shape as I applied my own theories to music and it's make up, I had different production names for different theories about music, one of them I remember was Spiral productions which was based on a drawing I did of a keyboard and the relations of the different notes rhythmically and to do with pitch, other names were to do with colours, feeling, or just experimntal ideas. Out of this period I guess because of all the different explorations of music I was doing I began to think up ideas for concepts if I were to write an album and apply themes to it, and I decided that I did'nt want to limit the type of themes for the music, because I didn't want that to dominate how the music would sound throughout an album, so I worked out a way of Squeezing in the most ideas I possibly could into this small space, that could encompass actually very many dimensions and take the listener practically anywhere, and thats where the idea for the Nexus came about, because the name seemed to sum up exactly what I was doing with connecting all these different themes together to try and bring them all together in one place. And that will be the next thing you'll hear from this site, as my music goes on evolving and developing, and plunging into the depths of sounds and music that might just be something you've never heard of before!

My Interests

Music:

Influences: William Orbit is an artist who I'm still been amazed by even now, and is a constant inspiration to me as an artist, meeting him in 2007 along with Laurie Mayer of Torch Song whom I'm also a fan of, last year was a great moment for me as I've been a fan for the past 15 years of all the music and other talented artists that surround William Orbit. Many other great electronic artists have played their part of been an influence on my music too, the likes of, Tomita, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream & Edgar Froese, Jake Stephenson & alot of the Jumpin & Pumpin label artists, Sven Vath, Spooky, BT, Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom, Aphex Twin, Future Sound Of London, Brian Eno, Susumu Yokota, Global Communication & Tom Middleton & Troubleman, Thomas Dolby, Yello, Bjork, Adamski, Darshan, Royskopp, Luke Vibert, Guerilla Records, Warp Records, Sabres of Paradise, The Special Fx on Michael Jacksons records, old computer game music from before the time when they could get the sound of real instruments on there, the bleeps were fine really! I also listen to alot of classical music, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Vivaldi, Eric Satie, Handel, Mussorgsky, Myaskovsky, Vainberg, Delibes, Mendellsohn, Debussy, Mozart, Chopin, Stravinsky, Grieg, Borodin, many others. And I listen to pop too, I like 80s pop somewhat more than todays pop, but still think theres a good few sounds out there these days, so I would include Erasure, Depeche mode, The cure, Neneh Cherry, Milli Vanilli, Jermaine Stewart, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Billy Ocean, Prince, and amongst the new stuff, Goldfrapp, Sugababes, Haddaway, Emcue, Madonna, Duffy, Mark Ronson, Lilly Allen, Blur. And I should also mention that I have been a lifelong fan of Terence Trent D'arby who is now know as Sananda Maitreya, and he truly rocks!
Sounds Like: Well after that long list of influences you might wonder what on earth I'm going to sound like, but to be honest I would say my sound is unique in many ways as I've never really tried to imitate or sound like any other artist, and I wouldn't actually know how to either as I'm a self taught and very experimental artist. The influence is really in the ideas of the kinds things that might be possible with music, but I only get to those places by finding it for myself and not by trying to imitate. I'd describe my music as having a very organic structure to it, as I attempt to reveal the very make up of music that doesn't disguise the structures underneath but rather emphasizes them, even if they are at times sparse and seemingly uncomplicated, it takes alot more to hear them than one might imagine, it's just a case of listening, and listening again, and then again and sometimes in reverse, and then you might be right.
Record Label: yes, any label welcome, lots more new music
