About Me

Hi! My name is Lance, and I am unashamedly an opera geek. I was trained initially as a tenor by Sue Blouin, then by Georgia Wellborn and Joseph Blass (both students of Elena Nikolaidi) with pedagogy coursework by Karen Dale. On the graduate level, I was trained as a countertenor by Shirley Zielinski under the auspices of Richard Miller, along with additional private and pedagogical study with Keith Moore and Kristi Whitten. It was during this time that I made my professional debut as the Shepherd Boy in Puccini's "Tosca" with Nashville Opera. However, I consider myself retired from the stage, for I have such a stronger desire to teach; I absolutely LOVE my babies, and how gratifying it is to watch them grow and develop in their own individual artistries! When I am not teaching, I probably am spending time with friends and coworkers at Elan and/or Tribe, two ridiculously delicious addictions you should try if you are a social butterfly who loves enhancing your image. My Interests

I'd like to meet:

I don't really get starstruck with people, but considering the inspiration that five (of many) women have made on my singing and teaching, I would lose my tongue in the presence of them:Beverly Sills, because I crave her voice, personality, and wisdom for at least a few moments every day. Ask any one of my students to list singers I like, and Bubbles will be at the top of the list. (Ms. Sills passed away July 2, 2007.) Leontyne Price, because I do believe that never in my lifetime will there be a true Aida that compares to what Ms. Price offered us, nor do I believe that we will have a voice like hers in this century. Viva la diva! Mirella Freni, because (1.) she could deliver a line so powerful in femininity and grace, and (2.) no matter how many times I hear it, her "Ave Maria" from Verdi's "Otello" makes me weep. Bravissima! Marilyn Horne, simply because she is a phenomenal study in pedagogy every time I watch her sing. And Renee Fleming, who simply has one of the most stunning voices with remarkable technique of my generation. Brava!
