The Campaign to End Consumer Christianity

About Me

CONSUMING AS A LIFESTYLE
This Campaign is a campaign of self reflection. We hope each of us asks the question "What in my life do I approach as a consumer, or customer, that i need to approach as an employee of Gods Kingdom?" Am I hoarding materials that God's Kingdom could use for those in desperate need? Am I viewing my local church as a place to serve my wants---instead of a vehicle for me to serve God and others? Am I moving through life seeking one entertaining distraction after another?
Is it time for me to get back to work--as an employee of the Kingdom of God?
There are many ways to live a Consumptive life--a self centered life of taking without giving back.
A life out of balance--with what Jesus calls us to do in the world.
There are many things people use to distract themselves from the whole point of life, which is to love God and to love people. We each have personal palette's when it comes to consumption. They include materials, careers, entertainment, sports, family, and religious services. None of these things are inherently wrong, in fact, they are all good unless they become our purpose, or distract us from our real purpose--to love God and to love others. We believe this has become an issue in American Christianity...and we believe it time for Christians to Stop Consuming and get back to work.
We no longer have time to serve God and others because we have filled our schedules with our consumptive lifestyles.
The goal of our Campaign is not point a finger at others, but to look into the mirror and ask---"what do I consume?" If each of us were to ask ourselves this question and allow God to speak to us with an answer---the issues of materialism, poverty, stagnation within the local church, and many other "symptomatic" issues would begin to be rectified.
This is not the Stop Buying Campaign, or a Social Justice Campaign. While we stand with our brothers who cry out for justice in the world---this is not the end goal of this Campaign. While materialism has become a major distraction and a way of life for some, we do not feel that this is the root of the issue. Simply getting people to stop buying things will not solve our issues. We believe that Consumerism is much broader than the consumption of material things, and while materialism is important and need to be addressed---we believe it to be an outward manifestation of a much deeper personal issue. We have developed a deep mis-understanding of who we are as Christians and our role in The Kingdom of God.
We are the employees of The Kingdom of God...and we need to start acting like it.
Let us set down our Consumptive lifestyles and give our lives fully over to serving God and serving others....
Lets Stop Consuming...
Lets get back to work
Its what we were made to do.
CONSUMING CHURCH
The Church exists to serve God, not ourselves. Jesus died for The Church and then commanded us to go into our communities and show love; perform acts of kindness and show startling, shocking grace toward the anyone who would have it. Sacrifice our lives for others.
Have we compromised Jesus message of self -sacrifice? We ask so little to ensure people stay in the pews--so we can to ..grow... I have no issue with The Kingdom of God advancing. I pray for it everyday--that more people would experience the love of Jesus and give up what they want for what He wants.Growth is natural and Godly, but growth is not what we should be about.
Growth should not be our end game.
Our measuring stick.
We should care why we are growing.
There is no finger to point--except at ourselves. We are all a part of the problem. Leaders, too often we are hesitant to call people to greatness--concerned we will lose attendance and money. Christians are all too comfortable to do only what is demanded of them, allowing leaders to work merciless hours and carry the community on their back. Christians have seemingly given over the responsibility of their soul..s growth to pastors, programs and parishes. We leaders accept the trade for large congregations and the faint hope of reaching more lost souls. There is no one to blame but ourselves. It starts with me. Starts with you. There are no short cuts to working out our salvation--its time we stop looking for them.
THIS IS THE ISSUE BOILED DOWN:
The ONLY customer of the Church should be God The people who attend the church should come with the expectation and excitement to serve God and others. We are the employees not the customers.
It..s time we remembered that.
It..s time we live that.
