WHAT IS MINIMAL? During the early ‘60s, minimalism developed in the hands of such American composers as Philip Glass, Steve Reich, La Monte Young, and Terry Riley. Each had a rigorous system of composition, adapting their conception of music to a style containing fewer musical elements and often involving solitary work rather than collaboration. Minimalism engages the listener with eloquent musical elements including simplistic harmonies, repetitive loops, endless drones, and subtle pulses varying in duration, volume, and speed. The influence of minimalism can be felt in the works of experimental composer John Cageand New Age instrumentalist Steve Roach as well as in styles such as ambient, modern classical, and abstract music.
