RARE GROOVES

About Me

Peter Reyes was born and raised in the "Little Havana" Union City, New Jersey to Cuban parents. From an early age, Peter started to listen to black radio shows through which he discovered the roots of Soul, Funk, Latin, and Jazz. Artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, Ashford & Simpson, Mandrill, War, Fania All Stars, and Tower Of Power were profound influences to him.
In 1974, Peter was introduced to Tony Gonzales, who at the time was running some local venues such as the "The Mongoose", "The Penthouse", and "The Odyssey". Tony became a mentor to Peter, introducing him to programming techniques, clubs and DJs of the time. At his venues, Tony brought in DJs from NYC that included the likes of DJ Frances Grasso (The Sanctuary), Richie Kaczor (Turntable), and Tony Smith (Barefoot Boys). And when Peter was given the opportunity to open up for some of the guest DJs, it was no turning back! Later on influences like David Mancuso (Loft), David Todd (Le Jardin), Bobby DJ Guttadaro (Infinity), Larry Levan (Paradise Garage), Roy Thode (Ice Palace), Jim Burgess (Studio 54) would inspired Peter to create his foundation for the music he would program in the coming years.
In 1976 while stationed in Germany, Peter had the opportunity to DJ all across Germany and Europe at clubs such as: 25 Club, The Cobra, Big Ben and The Eastside. On his return in the early 80s, Peter landed a residency at the "The Monastery" in Seattle, Washington, when the legendary DJ "Walter Gibbons" of the Salsoul fame was about to leave back to New York. There Peter began developing and honing his techniques and cultivating his emotive style. Peter played 15-hour sets to a weekly crowd of 2,500 frenzy dancers. Soon Peter established the club as a haven for the likes of Madonna, Pointer Sisters, Culture Club and many other great performers. As a result of this residency, Peter was offered guest spots throughout the US, and internationally.
After "The Monastery", Peter returned to New Jersey and from 1985 - 1989 decided to focus on his personal business career. Peter eventually returned to the wheels of steel in 1990 and began playing again at guest stops through out the world and at numerous well known NY/NJ area clubs such as: Discovery II, Copcabaña, Fantasia, Club Zanzibar, The Loft, Sound Factory Bar, Sapphire Lounge, and Tribecca. Currently you can find Peter playing for the who’s who’s in the fashion, film, and music industry at venues worldwide or at NYC spots like: SOB’s, Eugene, Lotus, Avalon, Centro Fly, Canal Room, Discotheque, Roxy, 10 West, Melting Pot, and the list goes on & on.
Peter’s unique skills as a DJ is his capacity to not only incorporate diverse genres and styles, but to transcend them by infusing his music with pure emotion. Peter’s talent is matched only by his passion, which has seen him become one of the most respected veteran DJ among his peers and in the industry today. Peter continues to go strong after 32 plus years and has a record collection of over 50,000 plus records to show for it.
In 1997, his close friend DJ Hippie Torrales encouraged Peter, to start "Records Ltd" a vinyl search service. The service provides DJ’s producers and avant collectors of rare 12inch singles, LPs, and 45's. (Disco, Funk, Soul, Latin, Jazz, and Italo) the opportunity to locate titles they are seeking for. Presently his business continues to grow to include weekly auctions. In 2001, Peter joined the ranks of Up Skirt Records, a UK based company with offices in London and Ibiza, as their US representative. He is responsible for US promotion and marketing, A&R and Licensing.
Presently, when Peter is not multitasking on several projects or playing out, Peter can be found managing the facilities of "The Village Voice" in New York City. Currently, he is actively producing and mixing various projects.
