My first band was called "Head". Formed in 1971, we played music such as Grand Funk Railroad, Ten Years After, Ozzy and the like. Being 17 it was quite a thrill to win the U.P. State Fair Battle of the Bands.
The next two bands I was in were "Flesh" and "Lunch". Both bands experienced the music of Yes, King Crimson, and Jethro Tull.
Around 1976 a different band emerged called "Jerry Kane and Friends", performing Stevie Wonder, Dave Brubeck, Rolling Stones; and The Beatles.
After that I got the chance to play in some bluegrass and country bands such as "The Slim Rhino Band", playing songs by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggert (I'll fix your flat tire Merle, don't want to see your hands all covered with erle - Asleep at the Wheel).
This takes us to my first encounter with "Whistle Gear" in 1978, who were covering the classic rock of the 70's like Fleetwood Mac.
In the early 80's I was in a Jazz Fusion group named "Icarus" featuring two keyboard players and a sax player. It was a great band because of the collaboration that produced some interesting original material.
Also in the middle 80's I started recording with "Mark Lamar", a guitar player from Green Bay. We worked together though the 80's, producing a lot of original material that got airplay in throughout the area.
In 1984 Whistle Gear reformed and played continually to packed crowds. It was a great experience because we were able to play so much of the music we wanted to play. They were truly a talented and tight band.
Around 1987, I joined the "Steve Grimm Band". Grimm came from "Bad Boy" a group that had a record deal with United Artists. As a result we were able to do original rock music of that era. Our first album was "Prisoner of Passion". It was a rush to open for bands like Nazarath, Blue Oyster Cult, Alice Cooper, Joe Walsh, and Jefferson Starship.
When I left Grimm, I came back home to play in various local bands, one of which was The Gear.
Eventually I put music on hold because of education and work, but jammed with whoever I wanted to play with. Until the latest incarnation of Whistle Gear, which in my estimation is a KICK ASS rock and roll band. Everyone in the band loves to play and has a great time playing for the crowds they are generating.
I'm really grateful to all of the people who have come out to see me in the different bands I have been in. I hope you keep coming out, you never know when I'm going to be back out there!! I love ya and love playing for you.
